Memorial Day weekend is a busy time for travel, but tons of deals are available from sites such as Jetsetter. Last-minute weekenders who book by May 21 can claim an extra $30 off a two-night hotel stay (through May 31) with the coupon code Memorial30. This is also an ideal time to book future travel. Hotels.com is touting savings of up to 40 percent, and Orbitz is offering 20 percent off hotel stays through the end of the year. Book by May 24 and use the promo code TRAVELHAPPY.

Although the deepest discounts on summer clothes are still to come, if your family is not yet equipped for the season, this is the moment to stock up. Hot deals include men's, women's, and kids' apparel at Uniqlo, where savings will hit up to 90 percent off, and Ralph Lauren, which is offering an extra 30 percent off through May 26 with code RLMEM15. Regardless which retailers you favor, you'll likely find coupon codes galore, as well as free shipping deals, on top of Memorial Day sales.

At JC Penney, Black Friday-style "doorbusters" start at 4 p.m. Eastern on Friday; sales and coupons already abound online. Macy's is taking an additional 20 percent off sale items, and online shoppers can use the code HOORAY to stack a 25 percent discount on top of that. Lord and Taylor shoppers can grab an extra 20 percent off sale items with the discount code MEMORIAL. Nordstrom is running its half-yearly sale through the end of the month.

If you're in the market for a new car, think American-made in honor of the holiday. Look for Memorial Day deals from Chevrolet, where buyers get 15 percent cash back on select models. Consumers will also see standout lease deals on Chrysler and Buick vehicles this month, according to Kelley Blue Book.

Sears is offering mattresses up to 60 percent off, along with a free TV, grill, or luggage set, during its Memorial Day sale. Look for mattress deals at other department stores and dedicated mattress retailers, as well. Savings on appliances at Sears total 5 percent to 40 percent (or more for "hot buys"). Overstock has posted deals up to 70 percent off in a range of categories, and a Pottery Barn Kids sale promises up to 60 percent off.

Big box stores such as Walmart, Target, and Kmart will take any excuse to advertise lower prices. Shop carefully, though: These retailers have been featuring products such as grills, snacks, and outdoor gear that will be in high demand over the holiday weekend but aren't necessarily discounted. In some cases, they still might be cheaper than the sale prices elsewhere.

Don't hesitate to stock up on summer sports equipment. Dick's Sporting Goods is advertising 60 percent off select items through the holiday weekend. At Cabela's, the discounts reach 50 percent. REI's anniversary sale coincides with Memorial Day, offering select items at 30 percent off through May 25.

This is the weekend to get your home and yard in order for the summer. At Home Depot, you'll find 10 to 25 percent off appliances, as well as discounted plants and mulch. The Memorial Day sales at Lowe's will last beyond the holiday, through May 27 or later, and include 10 to 30 percent off major appliances.

Memorial Day weekend brings the start of summer fun -- and the chance to find some serious savings on just about everything. The holiday falls early this year, on May 25, so the sales have already started. Savvy shoppers are cruising the aisles and browsing online now -- there's no guarantee the merchandise will stick around through the weekend, and most sales end on the holiday. At the same time, don't rush to buy summer-centric goods such as warm-weather clothing and outdoor furniture. Those items will be at their lowest prices later in the summer.

This is not typically the best time to purchase consumer electronics, but don't count out the retailers in this market. Best Buy, like the home improvement giants, is offering up to 30 percent off major appliances. At P.C. Richard and Son, TVs, laptops, and speakers join appliances in boasting the hottest deals. Office Depot has posted Memorial Day specials on everything from laptops to desk chairs, and an in-store clearance event is going on now.

EBay is getting into the spirit with a range of deals that include free shipping, and Magazines.com is selling subscriptions for $1 or less an issue. Amazon has kicked off its Memorial Day markdowns with an apparel sale: 20 percent off with the promo code FUN20SUN. Stock up on printer ink and toner from 4inkjets, where the coupon code FLAG15 takes 12 percent off through May 26.
