Though the origins of hard cider date back to ancient Roman times, we live in an increasingly gluten-free world, and the popular alcoholic beverage made from bittersweet apples isn’t going anywhere. Texas-based cidery Austin Eastciders has expanded like crazy since its inception in 2013, popping up in grocery stores across the country.

With nearly 30 varieties available, you might not know which ones are worth it. Should you grab a variety pack? Or should you focus on a single-flavor six pack? I tasted some to find out. Here are 10 flavors of Austin Eastciders, ranked.

This is pretty much exactly what I want out of a 5% ABV crushable cider. It’s nice and dry, but not so much that it's undrinkable. The little snap of crisp apple is perfect here. Though I’m not the guy who would reach for a cider in normal circumstances, I might reconsider if Austin Eastciders is an option.

2. Blueberry Yuzu

Blueberry yuzu is a new addition to Austin Eastciders' light cider variety pack, so you may have to hunt a bit for this one. There’s a ton of balance on display here, with the first round of flavor ringing in all blueberry and an aftertaste controlled by yuzu. Another surprise, but damn, this is good. I’d murder one of these if it was poured over crushed ice.

The blood orange is oh-so-faint here, and I can’t tell if more flavor would help or hurt. I’d like to see it turned up by about 10%. Either way, I can fully see myself turning to a blood orange can any time I’m feeling burnt out on beer.

4. Passion Fruit

What’s great about the passion fruit cider is that it’s still apple-based. This is hard apple cider with passion fruit, not a passion fruit cider. The tropical tang is a treat here.

I’d also like to mention, because I’m a huge weirdo, that I get hyped on a good font. Austin Eastciders has some great fonts.

“Super dry” boasts the can, and it’s super right. This is so dry that I’m actually worried I can’t really taste anything — almost like a can of foam. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, because the faint ghost of an apple is somewhere in there, whispering through the wind, and I can actually see this becoming a staple drink of any house party.

6. Blackberry

I’m not sure I recognize this flavor as blackberry, but whatever it is, I’m into it. It’s very sweet and quite tart, but there’s still that dry sting at the end that rounds it out.

mango mimosa austin eastciders

7. Mango Mimosa

There’s an undeniable funk that comes gift wrapped with every mango-flavored beverage, and I just don’t love that. Aside from that, this is another tasty light cider, and that cane sugar comes heavily appreciated in a situation where I'd expect to see Stevia or aspartame.

tropical punch austin eastciders imperial cider

8. Tropical Punch Imperial Cider

My my. This packs a (forgive me) punch. As with pretty much anything that exceeds 8% ABV, there are some tougher, maltier flavors here — but the truth is, this is way easier to drink than any imperial stout I’ve ever tasted. It’s very much like the platinum Fruit Smash. It’ll get the job done.

tangerine margarita austin eastciders

9. Tangerine Margarita

I think at this point we may have taken our eye off the ball, but this is a pretty solid option for a 100-calorie drink. It’s certainly better than any sort of margarita-style seltzer I’ve ever had. I don’t know if it tastes anything like a cider anymore, what with the apple-meets-tangerine-meets-tequila-meets-lime combo, but I can see this being a reliable, summertime drink.

10. Gold Imperial Cider

What’s nuts about Austin Eastciders Gold is that while it clocks in at 8.3%, the main flavor you come away with is the dryness of the cider itself. It isn’t as malty as tropical punch, but there’s just a certain sweetness I’m missing here. That’s why I’ve turned to cider, at the end of the day.
