Snack Smart

Need a little boost to get you through that midday hump? Same here. When it comes to snacks, though, not all are created equal. Ideally, you're looking for high-protein, low-calorie snacks such as spruced-up edamame, pinwheels stuffed with lean meat and low-fat cheese, and elevated veggie snacks that provide sustained energy without a sugar crash.

Here are 10 delicious, nourishing snacks and quick meal ideas that Redditors say give them a boost of energy without weighing them down.

Add Protein Powder to Non-Fat Greek Yogurt

Though adding protein powder to non-fat Greek yogurt sounds slightly questionable, one Redditor says the result is a "tangy, high-protein pudding," which sounds absolutely delicious. Packed with probiotics, calcium, and protein, yogurt can support digestive health and — coupled with the protein powder — can help give you a nice energy boost. For an added touch of sweetness, add a dash of honey, granola, or fruit to make the concoction even more delicious.

Hummus With Veggie Sticks

Hummus paired with sliced veggies is another solid (and affordable!) choice for a healthy snack that doesn't compromise on taste or nutrition, Redditors say. "You can buy hummus at reasonable prices at places like Coscto, or you can make it yourself with just chickpeas, sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon juice, and any seasonings you like," writes one user, adding, "I love roasted garlic and Aleppo pepper in mine. Makes a great spread or dip for flatbread or veggies like cucumber and carrots."

Stock Up on Edamame

Edamame (a popular Japanese snack made from whole, immature soybeans) make for a nutritious and protein-rich snack and offers a surprising range of health benefits. They're packed with essential amino acids, fiber, and vitamins that not only stave off hunger, but also support muscle growth.

Buy them in steam-ready bags for less than $5, or opt for dry-roasted ones, as one Redditor suggests. "One of the great features of dried edamame is that it is Very Dry," the user writes. "Eat a handful of them and you will immediately crave a glass of water to wash it down and help you feel full."

Pinwheels made from low-fat cheese and lean meat are another great snack choice that deliver a protein-packed punch. One Redditor suggests "pinwheels made from a low-carb wrap, Laughing Cow cheese, cucumbers, sliced deli turkey," and honestly, those sound both delicious and filling.

Try 'Poor Man's' Sushi

Making your own sushi at home is another great way to get a balance of proteins, vitamins, and minerals to help you stay healthy and energized. Ingredients such as fish, vegetables, and seaweed are packed with antioxidants, and can be easily customized to your liking.

"I’ll sometimes put tuna and rice in a sheet of roasted seaweed and make poor man’s sushi," writes one user, adding that the quick meal is, "Super low calorie and high in protein." For an extra dose of healthy fat, add sliced avocado for a creamy and satisfying touch.

Get Creative With Eggs

Now that egg prices are dropping, Redditors suggest stocking up on eggs to make a variety of nutritious and yummy quick meals. "Hard to beat hard boiled eggs when it comes to the cost/protein ratio," writes one user, adding, "I like to chop off the egg whites and combine with some sautéed vegetables like onions and bell peppers for a salad of sorts." For a vegan version, replace the eggs with tofu to make a healthy "egg" scramble.

For all the pickle lovers out there (raises hand), one Redditor suggests using "slices of deli turkey or lean ham wrapped around spicy pickle spears" for a quick and easy snack. The Redditor says it's a "personal fave" of theirs, and honestly, we might just give it a go ourselves. Low in calories and fat, fermented pickles can help support healthy gut health.
