After an eternity of massively inflated egg prices, the cost of a dozen eggs has finally dropped for the first time since September 2022, and people are thrilled that they don't feel the need to take out a second mortgage just to have breakfast.

Eggs were on my grocery list last weekend, and instead of seeing the $5.79 price tag I balked at only a month ago, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the standard dozen was on sale for two for $6. I promptly made egg sandwiches for Sunday brunch to celebrate.

@katiesazkitchen How much are eggs where you are? I just got these from Walmart today, and the price finally dropped! I got them for $2.67! #restock #refill #restockasmr #asmr #homeorganization ♬ original sound - Katie’s AZ Kitchen 🍭🧺

I'm not the only one to notice the recent price drop, either, so it's not just a local Wisconsin phenomenon. Plenty of people on TikTok and Twitter have posted their amazement at local egg prices, too. Most people are reporting that they're around $3 per dozen, with some as low as just two bucks. That's practically pre-pandemic prices.

So what made egg prices skyrocket anyway? A combination of inflation and the biggest outbreak of avian influenza ever in the U.S. created the perfect storm of egg-flation. The average price of a dozen eggs peaked at $4.82 in January 2023.

GalleryInflation Continues To Bust Household Budgets

According to the latest inflation data from the Labor Department, the price of eggs decreased 6.7% from January to February, the steepest decrease since May 2020. The average price of a dozen eggs in February was $4.21, and considering the prices we're seeing all over the country just a couple of weeks later, it's safe to say that the average will drop once again when data for March becomes available. Looks like deviled eggs and egg hunts are back on Easter to-do lists this year.
