When Sam Walton opened the first Walmart on July 2, 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas, he wanted to give customers unparalleled bargains on a wide variety of products. He succeeded, because by the time the '60s were over, there were 18 stores in three states — and the rest, of course, is history.
