No Warranty? No Thanks

If you haven't been plagued with the scam calls warning about "your car's extended warranty," count yourself lucky. They are relentless.

But sometimes, spending a bit more on a warranty is worth it, because it provides peace of mind and protects against unexpected expenses such as product failure or damage. Snagging that warranty can also save you from the financial burden of having to repair or replace expensive items. Here are nine items that should have a warranty, whether it comes with the product or is added to it.

Electronic waste ready to recycle

Having a warranty on electronics, such as smartphones, gaming consoles, and laptops, can save you a great deal of money since these devices are prone to malfunctions or accidental damage. My parents had a 60-inch flatscreen TV that just stopped working for no apparent reason after they tried mounting it to the wall. Boy were they angry they didn't have a warranty on it.

Appliances like refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers can be costly to repair or replace should they stop working properly. Having a warranty on these items can offer financial protection in case of unexpected breakdowns or malfunctions, allowing you to get them fixed or replaced without straining your budget.

Having a warranty on a vehicle — especially older models — can be a good idea because it covers major repairs, and protects you from expensive out-of-pocket costs. Some warranties also cover unexpected circumstances such as theft or vandalism to give you added confidence in your purchase in the event of mechanical failures or break-ins.

Home Systems

Home systems, such as HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) units or water heaters, are significant investments — and can be extremely costly to repair. A warranty on these systems ensures that you can address issues without having to pay for unexpected expenses that can hinder a comfortable and functional living space.

While furniture typically does not call for the same level of warranty coverage as electronics or appliances, opting for some level of protection on expensive pieces like vintage sofas, chandeliers, or pricey mattresses can be beneficial. Extended warranties will usually also offer protection against manufacturing defects or premature wear and tear to ensure that your investment lasts longer.

This one goes without saying, but high-value jewelry items such as engagement rings, necklaces, or watches, are more susceptible to damage or loss. Obtaining a warranty or insurance coverage on these items can help protect your investment in case of theft, damage, or accidental loss — offering both financial protection and peace of mind.

Luxury Accessories

Buying luxury accessories, such as name-brand handbags, often comes with a significant price tag ($35,000 Hermes bag, any takers?). Having a warranty or protection plan for these items is not only a necessity, it also provides much-needed peace of mind and financial security. But even then, how is anyone not a nervous wreck going anywhere with a handbag that costs as much as a car?

Outdoor Equipment

Items like lawnmowers, grills, or power generators used for outdoor activities can benefit from warranties since they remain at the mercy of the elements, year-round. Warranties can provide coverage against mechanical failures or defects to help you maintain your outdoor lifestyle without having to worry about unexpected repair costs.

Power Tools

Power tools often endure heavy use, making them more susceptible to wear and tear (not to mention they're expensive as hell). Having a warranty on these items can safeguard you against unexpected breakdowns or defects, which can be particularly helpful for professionals who rely on their tools for work, or for avid DIY enthusiasts.
