Taco Bell CEO Mark King made a bombshell announcement this week that might change the way you think of the taco- and Crunchwrap-slinging fast-food chain.

The company is looking at making the beloved nacho fries a permanent menu item, according to King during an investor presentation. That would position the chain as a direct competitor to drive-thru behemoth McDonald's and its famous fries.

Like the McRib, Taco Bell's fries have been brought back as a limited-time item repeatedly since debuting in 2018. The fries, with their bright orange seasoning and side of nacho cheese for dipping, were an immediate hit. The chain is hoping that making them a permanent menu item will help it compete with the golden arches, especially at lunch time.

Taco Bell believes that it can compete with McDonald's at breakfast too. The Irvine, California-based chain has been frustratingly wishy-washy about breakfast, especially during the pandemic, when morning sales were temporarily halted. But there may be a renewed commitment to breakfast coming, according to King, which would thrill bacon quesadilla fans.

Taco Bell superfans on the Reddit r/LivingMas forum are delighted that nacho fries might be here to stay but for reasons you might not expect. If the company removes fries as a limited-time-only offering, that makes more room for new, more exciting products. Volcano menu? Double Decker Tacos? One can only hope.

But before fries become permanent, fans can get a great deal on the new seven-layer nacho fries right now. Through Dec. 21, the fries, loaded with beef and black beans, cheese, and a bunch of other delicious stuff, are only $3 when you order them online. Sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate great news for fry lovers.
