You Spend What You Eat

If you’ve ever thought about changing your eating habits, there’s more than just the practice of eating differently to keep in mind. To shop on a certain type of diet can be a good or bad thing for your wallet, depending on what it is. CouponBirds rounded up six types of diets and made sample grocery lists for each.

Want to know what vegetarian, pescatarian, vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free, and halal diets cost? Take a look.

Vegetarian Diet

CouponBirds Comparison: You will save 14% per shop on a vegetarian diet

This is an easy one to understand; good meat costs more than produce. Most of the stuff CouponBirds has on the grocery list makes sense, though I’m not sure anybody is out here substituting oyster mushrooms for crab legs.

Pescatarian Diet

CouponBirds Comparison: You will save 5.9% per shop on a pescatarian diet

CouponBirds is sort of using the same system here as they did for vegetarian spending, substituting lots of plant-based meats, but that still works. A good way to save money would be to not go to wherever CouponBirds is shopping for $12 turkey.

Vegan Diet

CouponBirds Comparison: You will save 3.7% per shop on a vegan diet

I’m not sure I fully agree with CouponBirds on this one, because sometimes vegan products can cost a whole lot more than others. It’s hard to believe you’re going to save money on this one unless you’re eating incredibly simple, produce-driven salads.

Gluten free diet budget

Gluten-Free Diet

CouponBirds Comparison: You will increase your shop by 12% on a gluten-free diet

If you’ve ever been to a bakery or restaurant with a gluten-free option, this won’t surprise you. This seems to be the easiest allergy to exploit in price, with gluten-free options constantly costing far more than the standard counterpart. Keep a keen eye out for what you’re buying, cause it’s easy to get ripped off on a gluten-free diet.

Lactose free diet budget

Lactose-Free Diet

CouponBirds Comparison: You will increase your shop by 5% on a lactose-free diet

If you’re skipping dairy, you are going to end up paying more for dairy substitutes. There’s always the option of not eating things that normally contain dairy, but if you’re looking to switch to things like vegan cream cheese, expect to pay far more for it.

Halal Diet

CouponBirds Comparison: You will increase your shop by 4% on a halal diet

Here’s another one I find hard to believe. What is this $12 halal chicken soup CouponBirds is talking about? I see no reason a halal diet, which mostly excludes pork and alcohol, should cost you 4% more in a grocery spend.
