White: Rebuttel Chardonnay

Chardonnays get a bad rap for being buttery, oaky explosions of tropical fruit that can knock you backward. Not this one. It's bright and crisp, with apple and citrus on the nose, leading to bright hints of lemon, more tart apple, and just a touch of buttery smoothness on the finish.

Est. Price: $6 | Buy it at Aldi
This medium-bodied California red wine won a silver medal at the 2016 World Wine Championships, where judges called it a best buy. Tasters describe hints of chocolate, plum, and vanilla with earthy, oaky notes you'd expect to find in a cabernet sauvignon, not a merlot, but with a softer mouthfeel.

Red: Kirkland Signature Rioja Reserva

Est. Price: $7 | Buy it at Costco
Spain's Rioja region is known best for its tempranillo grapes, which produce full-bodied, fruity wines with moderate tannins. This Rioja is aged three years in oak barrels, producing dominant notes of blackberry, cherry, and vanilla, with hints of licorice and spice. The quality is remarkably consistent from year to year, and few other Riojas can match it at this low price.

Critics say it drinks like a zin: smooth and full-bodied, with a bit of spiciness on the finish — perfect for pairing with grilled meats or cheeses.

Aldi shoppers and professional reviewers alike rave about this cabernet sauvignon from California's Paso Robles region. Red: GSM Reserve Lot No. 96 Dry Creek Valley

Est. Price: $6 | Buy it at Trader Joe's
The GSM on the label stands for grenache, syrah, and mourvedre, the three grapes blended to produce this red wine from Sonoma County, California. Whiffs of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, and vanilla lead to a juicy, fruit-forward mix of more cherry, plum, and blackberry. With a smooth, slightly spicy finish, this medium-bodied blend is similar to French Côtes du Rhônes costing a few dollars more.

Red: Kirkland Signature Ribera Del Duero Gran Reserva

Est. Price: $14 | Buy it at Costco
If you've never had a tempranillo from the Duero region of Spain, you're missing out on some excellent wines. Blueberry, blackberry, and vanilla dominate this smooth, inky red, which lingers pleasantly on the palate. This Costco offering is fuller bodied than the Rioja, in part because it has been aged longer, up to five years. It would be a good idea to decant this wine and let it breathe for 30 to 60 minutes before serving.

Sparkling: Kirkland Signature Champagne Brut

Est. Price: $20 | Buy it at Costco
Yes, this is the real stuff from the Champagne region of France, not some California knockoff. This non-vintage, grand cru blend combines chardonnay, pinot noir, and pinot meunier sparkling wines. Tasters describe flowers and fruit on the nose, especially apples and citrus, followed by a light, zesty mouthfeel with hints of lemon and lime. And, of course, plenty of bubbles. Pair it with roast chicken or grilled Atlantic salmon.
