Drink Up

When it comes to insulated tumblers and travel mugs, Austin, Texas-based Yeti has established itself as the on-trend brand — with a price tag to match. Walmart also sells insulated drinkware under its (much, much cheaper) Ozark Trail brand. Both Yeti and Ozark Trail products earn rave reviews from owners, and product tests indicate that either brand will keep your hot drinks piping and cold drinks icy for hours. So what does spending that extra cash get you? Not much. They both are constructed of double-walled, food-grade 18/8 stainless steel and BPA-free plastic. Differences are in the details. Yeti's 30-ounce vacuum-insulated tumbler has a fancier lid with a sliding cover over the drinking hole and it's dishwasher-safe. The Ozark Trail version's lid doesn't have a covered drinking hole, and you must wash it by hand. Also, Yeti products offer more color choices. That's about it. Regardless of where you fall on the whole Yeti vs. Ozark Trail debate, you can't really go wrong with either brand. Here's a look at some of their most popular insulated tumblers, travel mugs, and thermoses.

Thirsty? Thirty ounces of your favorite hot or cold beverage will keep you hydrated and happy. Their signature MagLock sliding cover on the lid is a cinch to use, owners say, but even some people who leave five-star reviews admit it's not 100% leakproof 100% of the time. Still, it's hard to argue with a 4.8-star average rating compiled from more than 1,800 owner comments. Available in more than 20 color choices.

Walmart's answer to the Yeti 30-ounce tumbler also earns enthusiastic owner comments, with a 4.8-star average rating from more than 9,000 buyers. The primary complaint regards the sip slot on the lid; in this case, it's the lack of a sliding or snap-close cover, which occasionally leads to leaks and dribbles, some owners say. If you prefer the sliding cover of the Yeti, you can buy one for about $10 and use it on the Ozark Trail tumbler (they're interchangeable, reviewers say) and still spend less than if you'd purchased the 30-ounce Yeti tumbler instead. Available in eight color choices.

This is a smaller version of the 30-ounce Rambler with the same features as its big brother, including the MagLock lid. A handful of otherwise-satisfied users grouse about leaky lids, but it's hard to argue with a 4.8-star average score from more than 13,000 reviewers. The major difference between this and the 30-ounce tumbler? You've only got 18 colors to choose from.

There's nothing stopping you from drinking coffee or tea out of a 30-ounce tumbler, but be honest: How much can you really drink in one sitting? The lid on this Yeti mug doesn't have a MagLock sliding cover over the sipping hole (but you can buy one separately, as some owners say they have done). But it does have a nice, big handle to easy gripping, and it's available in 16 color choices.

Walmart's insulated travel mug is a couple ounces smaller than the Yeti version, and it only comes in one color, burnished stainless steel. But owners who leave feedback on the Walmart website don't seem to mind these minor details, and you won't find a comparable stainless-steel travel mug for less money at Walmart.

Reading reviews from owners, two things are apparent. One, most buyers really love their Yeti insulated tumblers. Two, many of those otherwise-happy owners who leave reviews (more than 5,000 of 'em) really, really wish this lowball tumbler came with Yeti's MagLock lid. Available in 15 colors; a four-pack of lowball tumblers is also available. Yeti also sells a set of two 10-ounce wine tumblers for about $50.

Double-walled tumblers aren't the only thing that Yeti makes; they also sell a range of insulated bottles and jugs like this one. Instead of a lid with a sliding cover, the Rambler's top screws off to reveal the same sort of spout you'd find on a bottle of water or soda. Available in 10 colors.

Walmart's version of an insulated beverage bottle is a couple of ounces smaller than the Yeti, but the major difference lies beneath the screw-off cap. Instead of a narrow, bottle-like mouth like the Yeti, the Ozark Trail's top is roughly the size of the bottle's circumference. It's big enough that you can slip a few ice cubes into your drink, something you can't do with the Yeti bottle. If you'd prefer a sipping spout, Ozark Trail sells a similar 24-ounce water bottle for the same price.
