Total Recall

Auto recalls seemed to be in the news frequently in the past year, leading to many consumers receiving a card in the mail informing them that their cars or trucks might be included. Several manufacturers had far more recalls than others in 2022, and some for far more serious reasons. We took a look at the Department of Transportation's recalls by manufacturer data to pinpoint which automakers dominated the year's recalls.

Volkswagen Group

Number of Recalls: 46

Vehicles Included: 1,078,443

From annoying malfunctioning rearview cameras to potentially deadly malfunctioning airbags that could explode if deployed during a car crash, Volkswagen's recalls ranged from minuscule to substantial. In addition to Volkswagen brand vehicles, the recalls extended to Audi and Porsche nameplates.

Number of Recalls: 34

Vehicles Included: 1,093,689

Nearly a million older Mercedes-Benz models were recalled in June 2022 for faulty braking systems. The German automaker's recalls for the year didn't stop there, however, surpassing 1 million potentially impacted vehicles.

General Motors

Vehicles Included: 3,371,302

GM recalled 825,000 trucks in December for headlight issues, and the end-of-the-year recall pushed the auto giant's recall total past 3 million models.

Number of Recalls: 24

Vehicles Included: 1,458,962

Kia had a tough start to the year, recalling 410,000 vehicles in January because of concerns that vehicle airbags might not deploy in a crash. The defects didn't stop there, and the South Korean automaker's recall total reached nearly 1.5 million for the year.

Vehicles Included: 1,452,101

Hyundai grappled with a massive recall that included 281,000 of its vehicles attributable to front seat-belt pretensioners that could explode — a malfunction that led to a handful of reported injuries.

Engine fire risks sparked a recall that included 917,000 BMW models in March, which wound up being the automaker's most notable recall of the year.
