How To Save Money With Retailers That Price Match Amazon

With inflation on the rise, many products and services have become more expensive. The rising cost of living can make it difficult to stick to a budget and save money. One way to stretch your dollars? Take advantage of retailers' price matching policies, especially when comparing Amazon prices. But does Amazon itself price match? What about other retailers? Here are a handful of retailers that will adjust their prices to match the e-commerce giant — plus a couple that won't.

Short answer: No

Long answer: While Amazon does not offer a price match guarantee for products sold on its website, it serves as a pricing yardstick for other retailers. As Amazon's policy on price matching states, “We strive to maintain low and competitive prices on everything we carry. We constantly compare Amazon’s prices to our competitors’ prices to make sure that our prices are as low or lower than all relevant competitors. As a result, we don't offer price matching." (Darn you, Jeff Bezos)

Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Target does offer price matching, which extends to a list of roughly 30 retailers, including Amazon. If you find a lower price for a product sold directly through Amazon (third-party Amazon sellers are not accepted), you can notify a Target team member, and they will verify the price. If the price match is approved, Target will match the competitor's price for that item.

Note that Target's price match policy applies to in-store purchases and online purchases made through Target.com, and additional restrictions and exclusions may apply depending on the region you're in and the cost of shipping.

Short answer: Yes
Long answer: The electronics giant will match the price of a product from other retailers, including Amazon, Dell, Crutchfield, and HP, but there are a few caveats. To submit a price match request, you'll first have to make sure the item you found on Amazon is identical in brand, model number, and color. You should also verify that the product is brand new (not pre-owned, refurbished, or renewed), and is sold directly by Amazon and not a third-party seller. 

Best Buy's price match guarantee applies to both in-store and online purchases.

Short answer: Yes

Long Answer: While Walmart's physical stores won't price match Amazon — or any other retailer — you can request a price match if you're shopping online on Walmart.com. To submit a price match request, contact customer care on the website and send pictures and other relevant information of the item(s) you'd like to have price matched. You'll also have to make sure the product is in stock on Amazon and identical to the one being sold on Walmart.com. 

Walmart also won't price match products sold by Amazon's third-party sellers.

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: Lowe's will price match Amazon — or any other retailer — both in store and at Lowes.com. If you find a lower price on an identical product from a local competitor while shopping in a Lowe's store, bring the ad, printout or photo to an employee to complete the price match. When shopping on Lowes.com, price match requests can be made via the website's chat support feature or by calling its customer care line. 

Lowe’s won’t price match its competitors’ pricing for professional services such as labor and installation costs, certain custom products, bundle deals, and offers or coupons. It also won't match deals sold on special days such as Spring Black Friday and Black Friday.  

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: Staples' price match guarantee policy ensures that customers pay the lowest possible price when shopping at one of its brick-and-mortar stores. If you find a lower price on Amazon or on the Staples website, you can submit a request to have that price honored within 14 days, and Staples will refund you the difference. To take advantage of the policy, customers must bring proof of the lower price to a Staples store or provide details to a customer service representative over the phone. 

The lower price must be available to the general public, must not be sold through a third-party merchant, and will include any additional fees such as shipping and handling. 

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: If you find a lower price on Amazon, or at a physical store, Bed Bath & Beyond will match it. A few caveats: The item must be in stock at Bed Bath & Beyond, and must be identical in product code, brand, size, color, model number, and year. The price match policy applies to select national and local competitors, and further exclusions may apply such as clearance or closeout items, as well as offers that are limited to specific regions or require a membership.

Note: Bed Bath & Beyond's price match requests must be processed in-store or over the phone at 1-800-GO-BEYOND (1-800-462-3966).

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: JCPenney's price match guarantee policy states that the company will match a lower price offered by a competitor on an identical item. This policy applies to both in-store and online purchases, and is valid for seven days after the original purchase date. Customers must provide proof of the lower price such as an advertisement or screenshots of the product on the competitor's website. 

The price match applies to the final price of the product — including any applicable taxes and shipping fees; offers on limited-time discounts or limited-edition items may be excluded, and products sold via Amazon third-parties will not be accepted. 

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: Nordstrom will match a lower price sold by Amazon or any other competitor, but the company's policy gets very specific about which items qualify. If you buy a nice blouse at your local Nordstrom and then find a cheaper option on Amazon, Nordstrom will only price match the blouse if it's sold directly by Amazon, and if it's the same size and color as the one you bought from them. While this policy is pretty much standard across the board, it can get tricky when it comes down to the size of an item, particularly with clothing.

Nordstrom's pricing policy applies to both in-store and online purchases. Customers must submit the request within 14 days of purchase for in-store purchases and within 10 days of the shipment date for online purchases. 

Short answer: No

Long answer: While some Kohl's stores may match a competitor's price upon request, the company's policy states that it will not honor online pricing — including from Amazon. However, customers can still submit a price match request by visiting a local Kohl's, and must print and bring with them a copy of the competitor’s ad showing the lower price for the product they wish to price match.

The ad must also include the "current price, a description of the item and the competitor’s current/valid retail or sale price of the item," the company states. 

Short answer: No

Long answer: Since CVS is able to keep higher prices for its products due to a "convenience factor" — which includes a greater concentration of stores and their long operating hours — the pharmacy giant does not offer price adjustments or have a price match guarantee policy. However, there are still ways you can save money at CVS through a variety of rewards programs: You can sign up for its ExtraCare program to routinely get discount coupons through its website and app. 

CVS also accepts discount cards such as GoodRx, as well as SNAP, EBT and food stamps in nearly 7,000 stores nationwide.
