When it comes to ordering takeout, Americans have quite a diverse range to choose from. According to a study by Seating Masters, which analyzed Google search data, the most popular takeout cuisines in the U.S. show a clear preference for flavors that range from the familiar to the unconventional. The top 10 most Googled cuisines reveal not only what Americans love to eat on the go, but also how these global dishes have been embraced and adapted across the country.

1. Chinese

Leading the pack with a whopping average of 8,599,933 monthly searches, Chinese food remains a staple of American takeout culture. Its popularity stems from its affordability, convenience, and a menu full of dishes that have been adapted to suit American tastes. 


Favorites like General Tso’s, lo mein, and crab rangoons have become synonymous with comfort food, especially during the holidays when some Americans honor the tradition of ordering Chinese on Christmas Day. There's also a growing appreciation for not just the food, but also for its beverages like margaritas and tequila-based cocktails that complement dishes like burritos, fajitas, and tacos.

Averaging 3,543,987 searches per month, Indian cuisine is celebrated for its use of vibrant spices and herbs. Its diverse dishes range from creamy curries and zesty tandoori to aromatic rice dishes and flavorful breads like naan and roti. The complex flavors and satisfying heat found in Indian dishes have made them a go-to for those looking to explore more adventurous and flavorful takeout options.

With 3,070,734 searches each month, Italian food has a special place in the hearts of many Americans. Whether it’s classic dishes like pasta and pizza or more refined fare like risotto and tiramisu, Italian cuisine has something to delight every palate. The widespread availability of Italian restaurants has also helped this cuisine remain a popular choice for takeout across the country.

Attracting 2,666,218 monthly searches, Thai food is known for its delectable balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors. Dishes like pad thai, tom yum soup, and green or panang curry have become favorites among those seeking a taste of Southeast Asia. The variety of flavors and textures in Thai cuisine keeps it in high demand, especially as more Americans become familiar with its distinct flavor profile.

With 1,165,571 searches each month, Korean food has seen a surge in popularity thanks to its bold flavors and unique dishes. Staples like bibimbap, kimchi, and Korean BBQ offer a culinary experience that’s both traditional and trendy. The rise of Korean pop (K-Pop) culture in the U.S. has also contributed to the growing interest in this cuisine.

Drawing 1,085,735 searches monthly, Japanese cuisine is admired for its simplicity, precision, and attention to detail. Sushi and sashimi are perhaps the most well-known, but dishes like ramen, tempura, and teriyaki are also widely popular. Japanese food appeals to those who appreciate clean, fresh flavors, and an artful presentation.

Averaging 805,956 searches per month, Vietnamese food is gaining recognition for its use of fresh and healthy ingredients. Closing the top 10 with 674,700 searches per month, Greek food offers a taste of the Mediterranean with dishes like gyros, moussaka, and souvlaki. The heavy use of olive oil, herbs, and fresh vegetables makes Greek cuisine both flavorful and nutritious. It’s a popular choice for those who enjoy meals that are hearty, delicious, and healthy.


On the flip side, Tunisian cuisine, with just 5,902 average monthly searches, is one of the least explored takeout options in the U.S.
