America's Most Extravagant and Luxurious Hotels

While Americans may not be doing as much traveling as usual right now, there’s no harm in daydreaming about a time when we can. And to make future travel even more appealing, many hotels are offering very flexible booking terms — including free cancellation in many cases. Need a little armchair inspiration to feed your wanderlust until life returns to normal? Here are more than two dozen of the most extravagant and luxurious hotels across America, places where you may want to consider booking a room and pampering yourself when the time is right.

Nashville, Tennessee

Price for one night: $700+  

The Hermitage is certainly one of the most luxurious addresses in Nashville. The building, which dates back to 1910, is the longest standing hotel in the city. Over the years, everyone from Babe Ruth to John F. Kennedy, and Johnny Cash has stayed at this historic charmer. Each of the 122 guest rooms have an average of 500 square feet. Property amenities include a four-diamond restaurant, spa, and fitness center. Less pricey rooms can go for $375 a night here.

Depoe Bay, Oregon

Price for one night: $710

Among the upper end of the spectrum in Oregon is the charming and stylishWhale Cove Inn, where suites can be a steep $710 per night depending on when you visit. Other rooms can be had for $545 The luxury boutique hotel sits on the Oregon coast and is one of the most exclusive inns throughout the state. Frommer's gushes over the place, giving Whale Cove Inn its highest, three-star award while noting: "There is nothing else like this boutique inn anywhere on the Oregon coast ... jaw-dropping view ... you will experience the best that Oregon's shore has to offer."

Hamburg, New Jersey

Price for one night: $800+ depending on the date

Billed as the closest luxury resort to New York City, Grand Cascades Lodge features biosphere tropical indoor pool, a biosphere snow pool and a spa. There are also six golf courses, and a variety of dining options. A 2-bedroom suite, which features a jetted hot tub, washer and dryer, and a full kitchen complete with a dishwasher, is among the cozier options.

Cape Elizabeth, Maine

Price for one night: $900+ depending on the date 

An oceanfront luxury resort,Inn by the Sea, is just outside the popular city of Portland. Traditional rooms here start around $212. Beach suites at the elegant property can be $927 for a weekend night in the summer. Resort amenities include a pool, spa, fitness center, and the beach.

Newport, Rhode Island

Price for one night: $1,000+ depending on the date

In Newport, a community best known for being home to the jaw-dropping estates of industry titans during the Gilded Age, and let’s not forget Newport’s yacht-filled harbor, it should hardly be any surprise that you’d find some of the state’s priciest  hotel digs.Castle Hill Inn is one of them, where a suite can top a grand on weekend nights depending on the date, with prices in the $500 to $800 range at other times. The inn, which dates back to 1875, is part of the Relais & Chateaux collection of luxury properties and offers a blend of history and style. Accommodations range from beach cottages or rooms in the nine-room main mansion. By some accounts, each guest room could easily be described as its own work of art.

Charlotte, North Carolina

Price for one night: $1,000 

The Ritz-Carlton has always been synonymous with the best of the best. And the standard holds true in theCharlotte location of this legendary luxury brand. Located in the city’s Uptown neighborhood, the entire property features an eco-conscious ethos that’s woven not only throughout the design but also the dining and spa offerings. Rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows and interior design that’s meant to reflect the city’s history. Executive suites can top $1,000 for a weekend night in the summer, while entry-level deluxe rooms start at around $490.

Charleston, South Carolina

Price for one night: $1,115

When in Charleston, why not stay in a mansion? Voted #1 hotel in Charleston by Travel + Leisure in 2020, theWentworth Mansion is said to be the city’s grandest address. The opulent 21-room property is designed in the ornate Second Empire style and represents an example of America’s Gilded Age. The property is also known for its highly personal service and Southern hospitality. The property’s architectural details include pressed-tin ceilings, parquet floors, and original Tiffany glass panel. With some rooms available for $400, its 1,000-square-foot Grand Mansion Suite can cost $1,115 a night and features two floor-to-ceiling fireplaces and Italian chandeliers.

Kohler, Wisconsin

Price for one night: $1,200+ depending on the date

At this five-star and five-diamond property some of the most expensive options include the Governor Suites or the Presidential Suites, which can cost from $800 to $1,200 per night depending on when you book, though standard rooms can be had for under $300. Perhaps one of the most notable amenities at this full-service resort is the fact that it is home to the legendary Kohler Waters Spa, a world-renowned facility. The resort itself has been in business for 100 years and is known for its elegance and service.

Price for one night: $1,565

Like the Ritz-Carlton, the Four Seasons has a legendary reputation. And for good reason. Four Seasons properties never disappoint. When visiting Baltimore, theFour Seasons is the place to stay if it's luxury you're after. Designed to be a sophisticated urban retreat, the property is located on Baltimore’s harbor and features a five-star spa with a Finnish sauna, rooftop pool, and a fully equipped Harley Pasternak designed gym. King suites with harbor views are among the priciest options at this property.

Price for one night: $1,575

A world-renowned brand, the Chicago location of The Peninsula oozes all the refinement and elegance you would expect. The property has received the Forbes Travel Guide five-star rating every year since opening and in 2020, was ranked the No. 1 hotel in Chicago by Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards. There’s a two-floor spa to explore here, as well as a fitness center, indoor pool, and a sun terrace. The Peninsula's Superior rooms can be found for $425, its Executive suites run $800 per night. The Grand Deluxe suite, meanwhile, will cost you at least $1,575 per night.

Middleburg, Virginia

Price for one night: $1,715

A destination resort,The Salamander oozes luxury and refinement. Set on 340 acres in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains amid horse and wine country, the five-star estate property aims to be both opulent and homelike at the same time. Activity options meanwhile range from outdoor pools to tennis courts and a complimentary putting green. There’s also a full equestrian center. King rooms and those with two queen beds list for $650, while the Salamander's 1,100-square-foot Grand Prix Suite can go for $1,715 per night.

Price for one night: $1,730

With its butlers, resort-style pool piazza, and Afternoon Tea at the Astor Court, it’s hardly any surpriseThe St. Regis Atlanta has earned the distinction of being a AAA five diamond hotel. The elegant guest rooms include white marble bathrooms, iPad room controls, and luxe linens. Some rooms go for around $570 midweek, but for $1,730 per night, you’ll get a balcony corner suite on a summer weekend night.

New Hampshire

Price for one night: $1,970

An iconic and legendary property that has hosted its fair share of presidents, theOmni Mount Washington Resort may not set you back an absolute fortune with some rooms available for as little as $274 a night, but it is certainly one of the most famed luxury properties in the state. In addition to presidents, it has hosted celebrities and even famous poets over the years. The Mount Washington Resort has also been named the #6 best ski resort in the U.S. and Canada by Conde Nast, as well as #1 best ski resort on the East Coast. Top of the line rooms include the Presidential Wing Suite, which can be booked for $1,970.

Washington, Connecticut

Price for one night: $2,300+ depending on the date

If your bucket list includes an elegant country retreat that immerses you in New England-style luxury, look no further than theMayflower Inn & Spa. The gardens alone are drool-worthy at this 58-acre property. Located about two hours outside New York City, this luxe retreat, where some rooms can go for over $2,300 for a summer weekend night, also offers holistic wellness treatments, and guest rooms decorated to resemble a lavish English country house. Details include four-poster beds, oriental rugs, and abundant views of nature.

Price for one night: $2,200

Located in Philadelphia’s tallest building, theFour Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center features restaurants created by a Michelin-starred chef and a James Beard award-winner. There’s also a luxe spa, an infinity pool, and given its perch at the top of a 60-story building, stellar views are standard. Premier rooms start around $520, but a corner suite with skyline views will put you in the $2,200 price range.

Naples, Florida

Price for one night: $2,239

A Club Room will cost you more than $2,000 at The Ritz-Carlton in Naples. The swank property is just a 4-minute walk to the beach and features luxury spa treatments "inspired by the garden and the sea." There’s also a 36-hole champion golf course, relaxation pool, family pool, and guest rooms featuring views of the Gulf of Mexico.The property’s balcony-equipped Club Rooms on high floors are among the most expensive here and include access to the exclusive Club Lounge.

San Antonio 

Price for one night: $2,495

While you might be able to snag a Classic room atHotel Emma for $595, its Otto Koehler Suite checks in at nearly $2,500. But that will get you a penthouse view, an oversize clawfoot tub, and an eight-person dining table. The historic hotel is located on San Antonio’s riverfront and is in a building that was formerly a 19th century brewhouse. The property is designed to feel like the stylish luxury home of a fascinating friend. Guest suites feature private dining areas, two-story terraces, and custom-designed furniture. Original artwork lines the walls, and rooms often have vaulted ceilings and original stonework.

Truckee, Nevada

Price for one night: $2,499

If you’re looking to drop some serious cash on a hotel in Nevada, you generally have plenty of options. But with the pandemic impacting visits to High-Roller Central — aka Sin City — some of the pricer options can actually be found in resort communities like Lake Tahoe.The Ritz-Carlton in Lake Tahoe is holding its own with rates for three-bedroom suites listing on some dates for a starting price of around $2,500. Other options can go for less than $400, depending on the season. Of course, with its mid-mountain perch in ski country, providing ski-in and ski-out access, it’s no wonder this hotel is incredibly popular. There’s also a spa onsite, and plenty of fine dining.     

Jackson, Wyoming

Price for one night: $2,600

TheAmangani, is located atop a butte just outside the popular destination of Jackson Hole. With some options available for around $1,200, suites at this posh five-star getaway can be as much as $2,600 per night, and in many ways, what you’re paying for is location. The resort is on the edge of stunning Grand Teton National Park and will fully immerse you in nature, including frequent wildlife sightings. There are also roomy suites with large terraces that provide views of the Snake River Valley.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Price for one night: $3,100

You could, of course, choose the local outpost of the Four Seasons if you're simply wanting to find the most expensive hotel option. But for a high-end luxury option that also offers a ton of local flavor, there's alsoThe Inn of the Five Graces. Located in Santa Fe’s historic district known for its Pueblo architecture, The Inn of the Five Graces is made-up of several adobe buildings filled with luxurious furnishings. To add an exotic touch, there are also the influences of East Indian and Tibetan antiques as well as oriental carpets. Think of it as an incredibly inviting melting pot of vibrant cultures. The property earned several accolades as part of Conde Nast's Readers' Choice Awards in 2019 including #17 top hotel in the world; #4 top 10 overall USA hotels, and #1 in the Southwest and western USA. Enough said. Some rooms go for as little as $660, but if you want to go all-out, opt for the Luminaria Villa, which is an opulent 2,000 square feet.

Price for one night: $3,500

Luxury in St. Louis won't cost you quite as much as in other big cities, with some rooms in the $390 price range, but the Ritz Carlton Suite atthis five-star hotel can cost some $3,500 for its 2,650 square feet of comfort. The luxury property recently went through a renovation to step up its style even more, offering what it calls "global sophistication with Midwestern spirit." Highlights include the largest dine-in wine cellar in the city, a spa, and a sprawling fitness center.    

Maui, Hawaii

Price for one night:$3,920

Want to drop a pretty penny on an unforgettable hotel experience, then set your sights on Hawaii. The choices are practically endless for the well-heeled. Among the notable options is theMontage Kapalua Bay, a 24-acre retreat located along Namalu Bay. The grounds stretch from the peaks of the West Maui mountains to the Pacific Ocean and include a rare native rainforest, as well as a marine conservation district. There are also golf courses, a spa, and several restaurants. While other options are available at around $1,500, the four-bedroom Premier Ocean Grand residence is among the most expensive accommodation choices at this lush resort.

New York 

Price for one night: $4,770 

A king room at The Lowell, a posh five-star hotel that’s just a 3-minute walk to Central Park can set you back more than $700 and a two-bedroom suite can be nearly $4,800. The hotel does put you a stone’s throw away from some of the city’s most popular sites, including the Museum of Modern Art (a 14-minute walk) and St. Patrick’s Cathedral (a 15-minute walk). As for the hotel itself, it was named one of the World’s Best in 2019 by Travel + Leisure and is rated “exceptional” on the Hotels.com website by past guests who rave about its attentive and professional staff. The elegantly appointed guest rooms are known for custom headboards, cashmere throws, and polished oak floors covered in antique oriental rugs.

Washington, D.C.

Price for one night: $5,000

One of the most notable options in the nation’s capital, theMandarin Oriental is located along Washington D.C.’s southwest waterfront just a few minute’s walk from the National Mall and many famous  monuments. The five-star property includes a full-service spa. Room rates vary depending on when you book and which website you use to make the reservation, but Deluxe rooms start around $320 per night. Its aptly named two-bedroom Presidential Suite with kitchen and butler's pantry will set you back at least five grand.

Barnard, Vermont

Price for one night: $4,800

Located amid pristine, bucolic Vermont countryside, about an hour and a half from the Burlington airport,Twin Farms sits on 300 secluded acres. Its dreamy setting aside, the history of the property is fascinating. Once owned by Nobel prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis and journalist Dorothy Thompson, who purchased the farm in 1928 for just $10,000, over the years a long list of famed literary figures were guests here. These days Twin Farms includes a spa and fitness center and 10 freestanding cottages, all with fireplaces and screened porches. Some rooms can go for $2,450 a night, but the two-level, 3,000-square-foot Chalet Cottage is the among most expensive choices.

Price for one night: $6,000 depending on the date

There are certainly plenty of top-priced options in Boston, including many of the well-known luxury brands such as Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, and Mandarin Oriental. Yet another legendary choice at the top end of the spectrum is theBoston Harbor Hotel, which will put you right on the city’s historic waterfront. Rooms here can start at around $600, and king bed suites with city views can be more than $1,500 per night, with the Constitution Suite commanding $6,000 for a summer weekend night. At Beantown’s only waterfront Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond hotel, every guest room at the Boston Harbor Hotel offers views of the cityscape. There’s also a trendy health club and spa onsite.

Rancho Santa Fe, California

Price for one night: $6,000

In a state known for its celebrity haunts, the competition for most expensive is fierce. But tucked in one of the most expensive ZIP codes in San Diego County, you’ll findRancho Valencia Resort & Spa, a Spanish Colonial-inspired retreat designed for the well-heeled, to put it mildly. Perhaps best known for its to-die-for spa and wellness offerings and its incredibly pampering atmosphere, Rancho Valencia also offers a serious tennis program with its 15 tennis courts; as well as two outdoor pools, and two signature restaurants designed to showcase the property’s commitment to sustainability and wellness. Guest rooms, meanwhile, are private casitas spread among 45 acres of gardens and citrus groves, the priciest of which is a Hacienda accommodation that sleeps up to eight people. If that's too steep, other options are available for only about $1,200 a night.

Price for one night: $7,660

Not many hotels in Washington come close in price to theFour Seasons Hotel Seattle, where a King Room with a view of the Seattle skyline lists for about $880 per night and the 2,480-square-foot Presidential suite can be $7,660 per night. The property itself is designed to be a sleek, urban retreat. It is located in the heart of downtown between the Seattle Art Museum and Pike Place Market. There’s also an outdoor infinity pool providing stellar city views and an onsite spa.

Aspen, Colorado

Price for one night: $13,000

Even the entry level rooms at The Little Nell are staggeringly expensive, topping $2,000 a night during ski season. But that’s really rock-bottom when you consider that suites list for more than $13,000 per night. Billed as Aspen’s most extravagant property — which is saying a lot in a city known to be a luxe celebrity hotspot — The Little Nell offers ski-in ski-out accommodations that can best be described as decadent. The service is also second to none. Which it should be for the price.
