Though you might expect a house owned by Madonna to be modern, you might be surprised by the Los Angeles home nestled in the Hollywood Hills once owned by the singer.

It's a salute to Mediterranean style and, though ornate, decidedly retro. Now on the market for $21 million, the 10,513 square-foot mansion has a scandalous history, but not because of Madonna. The home was once used to run a gambling den by mobster Bugsy Siegel in the 1930s.

The nine-bedroom, six-bathroom home has Mediterranean-style gates, ceilings, and even water features, plus a sedate pool in the backyard (sorry, no waterfalls).

Built in 1926, it's a Hollywood classic abode that doesn't seem to have changed much,  but no biggie — Madonna still has homes in London, Lisbon, Portugal, Beverly Hills, and New York she can decorate any way she wants.
