How Does Your State's COVID Vaccine Rollout Stack Up?

When the U.S. government began reporting vaccine data on Jan. 13, no state had vaccinated more than 5% of its population (South Dakota was leading at that time, with 4.8% of its residents having received a shot). A number of states were reporting no vaccinations at all. In just over three months, the rates have improved dramatically in a number of states, while others still lag far behind the national average. Cheapism teamed up with data visualization service HiGeorge to see how the vaccine rollout is going in each of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories. Use our interactive chart to see in real time how the vaccine rollouts are progressing and read on for a state-by-state snapshot. Each vaccination rate represents the percentage of residents who have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 26.6% 

There are a number of reasons residents of this island territory might be having trouble accessing the vaccine, as Carla Sofía González, a nurse with Puerto Rico Salud, said last month: "We have seen that many people face barriers in accessing COVID-19 vaccinations because they lack transportation, live in remote areas, or have conditions that make it difficult to reach a vaccination site." Puerto Rico Salud is working with Doctors Without Borders and other local health organizations to improve the vaccination rate.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 27.3%

While the vaccination rate might not be stellar in the U.S. Virgin Islands, there are other glimmers of hope. Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. noted April 6 that the territory's positivity rate for COVID-19 testing has fallen to 1.6%, the lowest since the start of the pandemic.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves noted in early April that vaccine hesitancy is at least partly to blame for his state's low vaccination rate. "I don't think there's any doubt there's vaccine hesitancy, particularly in rural areas across America," Reeves said on CNN's "State of the Union" in discussing some Mississippi residents' reluctance to get vaccinated. "I'm hopeful as we move forward that more and more of my constituents will recognize the importance of it."

Population vaccinated by April 11: 28.2%

According to AL.com, a state health agency-commissioned poll in March found that "about half Alabama's residents were either somewhat or very unwilling to be vaccinated." Some are hoping a recent $44.3 million state grant from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could help turn things around: The grant, says Birmingham, Alabama station WTVY, specifies that much of that funding focus on vaccine acceptance and awareness.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 28.8%

Though the state ranks low in vaccine distribution, it took a big step forward in late March and early April, when it vaccinated about 1 million people in around two weeks after opening up eligibility requirements to those 16 and older.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 29.7%

Website NOLA.com reported the first week of April that "appointments at many hospitals and clinics were wide open" and that "clinics found themselves with extra doses on the verge of expiring." Not a huge surprise, considering that a U.S. Census Bureau survey noted that the state ranks in the bottom five when it comes to a person's probability of getting the vaccine.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 30%

Like other states with lower vaccination rates, the issue in Tennessee is likely due to hesitancy in rural areas. In more urban areas, the vaccine rollout has done better. For example, Nashville Mayor John Cooper announced on Twitter on April 5 that 30% of all residents in his city had been vaccinated.

Indiana might not be getting the vaccine out as quickly as some other states, but there are signs things could be improving. A mass vaccination site opened in Gary, Indiana, on April 6, with plans to vaccinate up to 2,000 people per day, and the Chicago Tribune noted the very next day that the site was "welcoming plenty of Illinois residents."

Idaho has consistently ranked low on the U.S. Census Bureau's survey ranking residents' likelihood of getting a vaccine. The state hopes to turn that around, noted Idaho Falls' newspaper the Post Register, as providers and local public health districts work "to find targeted ways to bring COVID-19 vaccines to hard-to-reach populations, such as people hesitant toward the shots, rural communities, and Latino residents," adding that such efforts include "clinics that are mobile, have drive-thrus, or are at workplaces."

Population vaccinated by April 11: 31%

Analysis by The Associated Press in late March found that states such as Missouri, which offered the vaccine to larger groups of citizens out of the gate rather than rolling out a slower eligibility schedule, might have backfired, causing "a surge in demand too big for some states to handle and [leading] to serious disarray."

While the rollout has been slow in Wyoming, Gov. Mark Gordon has encouraged all residents to get vaccinated. "I would encourage every resident to take advantage of the vaccines, as [first lady] Jennie and I have, and help Wyoming move closer to ending this pandemic," he said in a recent release.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 31.3%

Like other states struggling with the rollout, Arkansas has rural populations with higher levels of vaccine hesitancy, according to news reports, and health providers have taken note. A Fort Smith pharmacist told a local TV station in early April that, despite the vaccine being made more widely available, "we just haven't had near the demand that we've had previously."

The Beehive State might be near the bottom of the vaccine rollout list, but there are signs things are looking up: Utah Department of Health officials announced April 7 that they had vaccinated 28,314 more people than the previous day. The trend continued the following day with 42,688 new vaccinations.

The Lone Star State's vaccination efforts have been "plagued by geographical, demographic, and data challenges," The Texas Tribune noted, but there are other issues in the slow rollout. For instance, the Houston Chronicle reported that counties "where former President Donald Trump won a larger than average share of the vote have vaccinated a smaller share of their population than the state average," while Biden-supporting counties have an average of around 16% more vaccinated residents. Texas Department of State Health Services Associate Commissioner Imelda Garcia told local NBC affiliate KXAN on April 8 that vaccine hesitancy was still an issue in the state and that despite increased supply, vaccine demand had begun to "dwindle."

Increased access to vaccinations could help South Carolina's numbers improve soon. For instance, Richland Country's Columbia Place Mall is expected to start vaccinating up to 7,000 people per day in mid-April; and an increased number of walk-in clinic sites were vaccinating those in Charleston and the Midlands in the first two weeks of the month.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 33.2%

The U.S. Army has been helping with vaccinations on the largest island in this U.S. Commonwealth, Saipan, located north of Guam. The rollout began April 3, according to the Pacific Daily News, and is slated to continue for 30 days.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 33.4%

The Las Vegas Review-Journal wrote in the first half of March that Clark County's two mass vaccination sites and its smaller sites were operating below capacity. Capable of administering 4,000 doses per day, the mass sites were rarely breaking 3,000, noted Southern Nevada Health District chief health officer Dr. Fermin Leguen.

In early April, Mountain State Sen. Joe Manchin announced that the American Rescue Plan had provided funds totaling more than $28 million to be directed toward helping the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources "support and expand COVID-19 vaccine programs" across the state.

While the Tar Heel State might rank in the lower half of this list, there are signs things could improve soon. For starters, Elon University polling in October and again more recently showed that the number of people who planned on getting the vaccine increased 30%. And a Raleigh TV station reported recently that many Harris Teeter and Publix grocery store locations in the state would start offering appointments soon.

While his office recently confirmed that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has received a single-dose Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine, he did so out of the public eye and has been low-key in urging the more hesitant of his constituents to be vaccinated. The state also considered, and rejected, a CDC-Dollar General collaboration that would have made it easier for the state's rural residents to be vaccinated.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 34.7%

The Buckeye State reported in early April that it was nearing the 4 million dose mark, but noted that vaccination numbers were starting to stagnate after a late March peak. The vaccinations that have taken place, however, are making an impact — Cleveland.com reported that among the age groups most vaccinated, coronavirus hospitalizations "have dropped sharply."

Arizona reported on April 10 that it, too, had surpassed 4 million doses of the Covid vaccines and hoped to keep that momentum going by opening up vaccinations to residents at sites such as the Tempe-based Desert Financial Arena, which will vaccinate people daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This southernmost territory of the United States might not be among the top 50% in terms of vaccine rollout, but it has also been largely COVID-19 free due to travel restrictions.

While Oregon has seen some rollout success with mass vaccination sites such as the one at Portland International Airport, which is administering about 5,000 doses daily, it faces challenges in other areas. Local news outlets report that vaccine hesitancy is still high in many rural areas.

While its vaccine rollout efforts haven't been as slow as some states, Michigan has experienced many consecutive weeks of having the highest COVID-19 case counts in the nation. As Click On Detroit noted in a recent report, "the surge has prompted the city of Detroit to increase their vaccination efforts, even going door to door to convince people to get the shot and also creating 'neighborhood spots' where doses of the vaccine are administered to any who walks up."

Population vaccinated by April 11: 35.4%

Near the middle of the vaccine rollout pack is the Sooner State, which has done just "OK" with its efforts so far. Those endeavors have been successful enough, however, that Oklahoma was one of the first states to offer vaccinations to nonresidents starting April 8.

The District of Columbia waned in the race to roll out the vaccine, with a Washington Post columnist calling its progress "agonizingly slow." Unlike some states' plans, in which residents could schedule their own appointments, D.C. residents have had to preregister for the vaccine via a website and await an invitation. The district did, however, open up eligibility to the general public on April 12.

The Aloha State announced April 9 that it was nearing a big milestone in its vaccine rollout, surpassing 900,000 administered doses, and every Hawaiian adult in the state was due to be eligible to get the vaccine by April 19.

Kicking off the top half of this list, Kentucky has been more successful with its vaccination rollout in part due to mass vaccination sites such as Louisville's Cardinal Stadium, where Gov. Andy Beshear announced the "Team Kentucky Vaccination Challenge" on April 12. The initiative promises that when the state hit the 2.5 million first-dose mark, Beshear will "remove capacity restrictions on nearly all events, businesses, and venues that serve fewer than 1,000 customers."

Population vaccinated by April 11: 36.3%

The Treasure State has experienced "a disjointed rollout that's been left to individual public health departments that are already overstretched," according to local news reports.

Washington is also seeing a disparity between urban and rural residents when it comes to vaccine demand, with the Seattle Times noting that those in communities east of the Cascades have been much more reluctant to get the shot.

While sparsely populated North Dakota has done well with its vaccine rollout, a local news outlet reported in mid-April that vaccine hesitancy in the western rural areas of the state would "be North Dakota's most daunting challenge on its path to herd immunity."

The Cornhusker State's rollout efforts have been aided in part by continually adding vaccination sites to the list of places people can get shots. In late March, for example, Nebraska pharmacies that participated in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program joined the efforts — a development that added at least 32 state pharmacies to the list.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 37%

Alaska's relatively successful vaccine rollout was covered by U.S. News & World Report in April, noting that the state's "indigenous population has played a major role in that achievement," additionally noting that "in some extremely remote Native villages, vaccination rates are now approaching 90%, according to state data."

Population vaccinated by April 11: 37.2%

Colorado's vaccination efforts have been aided by multiple drive-through community vaccination sites, including one at Denver sports venue Ball Arena. The rollout, however, has not been blip-free; a Colorado Springs clinic had its program suspended in April due to "irregularities in vaccine storage and handling."

Population vaccinated by April 11: 37.4%

Kansas' rollout has been successful in part due to events such as the drive-through mass vaccination event that took place in mid-April at the Legacy Park Soccer Park in Lee's Summit, where more than 4,000 doses were to be administered over two days.

Iowa's vaccination efforts have been gaining momentum steadily since the state started administering them in December. A governmental vaccination dashboard notes that the state reached a record high of 48,602 doses in one day on April 8.

Delaware's efforts have been successful for a number of reasons, including large-scale vaccination sites, drive-through clinics, and, mostly recently, millions of dollars in CDC funding to expand its programs.

The Prairie State's rollout efforts were gaining momentum in mid-April, as Illinois officials noted that, for the fifth consecutive day, it had administered more than 130,000 doses of the vaccine — a period that also included an all-time daily high of more than 175,000 shots.

The Land of 10,000 Lakes reported on April 11 that 31% of its population was vaccinated completely. As vaccination rates reached record levels, however, hospital admissions were also trending higher, likely due to variants.

The Golden State rollout has been going so well that multiple areas — including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties — opened up eligibility to the general public ahead of the planned April 15 expansion.

Maryland is one of a number of northeastern states that have landed in the top third of this list, and it continued to gain momentum recently, with a local TV station reporting that on April 9 it had administered 94,773 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, exceeding its previous record and breaking the 90,000 barrier for the first time. Gov. Larry Hogan noted in a statement that the state was pushing toward a "goal of doing 100,000 shots per day."

In mid-April, Virginia was getting nearly 75,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines into arms each day — a figure that represented a 20,000-dose-per-day increase over the same period the previous month, noted local Richmond station 8 News.

Guam has rolled out its vaccination program at clinics in high schools, universities, villages, and elsewhere. The island territory's "Path to Half" goal of having at least 50% of its residents fully vaccinated by May 1 is on track, noted Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio in local news reports. 

Population vaccinated by April 11: 38.7%

New York City hit the 5 million vaccine dose milestone in mid-April after doling out more than 550,000 shots in one week. The momentum continued with reports that a new Broadway vaccination site would open soon, as well as mobile units and pop-up sites. 

Population vaccinated by April 11: 39%

Pennsylvania expanded vaccine eligibility to all residents starting April 13, six days earlier than expected. While this might seem like good news, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the state actually ranks among the lowest "when it comes to the rate of people 65 and older who have received their first dose."

Wisconsin's rollout has gone well thanks in part to the number of clinics and other sites where residents can get the vaccine. Most recently, Milwaukee's Wisconsin Center welcomed more than 100 deployed soldiers charged with getting the shot into 3,000 to 4,000 arms per day. A more recent report, however, noted those target numbers weren't being reached and the center was therefore accepting walk-ins. 

Population vaccinated by April 11: 39.7%

While Rhode Island is ninth among the states in terms of residents who have received at least one vaccine dose, The Providence Journal reported recently that it is No. 3 in residents who are fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, the momentum continues: Providence TV station WPRI noted recently that the state has just released the largest number of vaccine appointment slots to date — an estimated 20,000. 

Population vaccinated by April 11: 41%

While other rural state residents are still hesitant to get the vaccine, the South Dakota Farmers Union has been lobbying those in the agriculture industry to go for it. The union posted multiple times on Facebook urging those eligible to get vaccinated. "Well, it's just the right thing to do, first of all," union president Doug Sombke told a local news outlet. "It's a community effort, right?"

Population vaccinated by April 11: 41.4%

Vermont is another state awarded CDC funding for its vaccine programs, most recently nearly $14 million "to support local efforts to increase vaccine uptake by expanding COVID-19 vaccine programs and ensuring greater equity and access." The Green Mountain State also recently made news for plans to prioritize vaccines for BIPOC households — a move that was met with some skepticism. 

Population vaccinated by April 11: 41.5%

The Garden State has seen success with its rollout thanks in part to six county-based vaccination "mega-sites" all over the state, including Rowan College of South Jersey, which began administering shots to Jersey residents in early January. 

Population vaccinated by April 11: 42.8%

Maine has helped vaccinate its rural population in part with mobile vaccine units, the first of which was deployed in mid-April. The state's efforts have also been aided by mass vaccination clinics in Bangor and Portland. 

Population vaccinated by April 11: 43%

While the Bay State lands in the top five in terms of vaccine rollout, Gov. Charlie Baker has had to defend those efforts in the media after criticism from residents who say they're still having trouble getting an appointment. Baker further noted the problems are due mostly to federal government-regulated vaccine supply and not the state's "delivery capacity."

Population vaccinated by April 11: 43.6%

How do successful rollout states get the job done? With events such as Trinity Health of New England's 24-hour Vax-A-Thon, which took place the second week in April with an aim of getting 4,000 doses into willing participants' arms.

Population vaccinated by April 11: 44.7%

As of around April 8, New Mexico reportedly had fully vaccinated nearly 32% of its residents. Those already impressive efforts will be further helped by nearly $25 million in CDC funding that was announced in early April. 

Population vaccinated by April 11: 50.9%

Like Oklahoma, New Hampshire will open vaccines to nonresidents (starting April 19) after becoming the first state to administer a first dose to more than half of its population. While the New Hampshire Motor Speedway hosted another mass vaccination event in the first half of April, Manchester TV station WMUR noted that "the state's fixed sites are phasing out soon." Added Gov. Chris Sununu: "I think over the next few weeks, we're going to try to get more doctors and more pharmacies to come on board and be part of that long-term solution for individuals. The state does not plan to be in the vaccination game for the long term. We are here as part of the crisis, and I think we've done a good job, and now, we'll get it back into the more traditional health care system."
