A popular brand of frozen chicken patties that are sold at Costco has been recalled because they may contain something unexpected: pieces of hard, clear plastic.

Foster Farms shipped 148,000 pounds of recalled chicken patties to Costco distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah, and Washington. The company became aware of the problem after receiving complaints from customers of hard plastic embedded in the fully cooked breaded chicken patties. That's a terrible surprise, but no injuries have been reported.

The affected product is an 80-ounce plastic bag containing 20 pieces labeled Chicken Patties: Breaded Chicken Breast Patties with Rib Meat. The bags show a best by date of 08/11/23, establishment number P-33901, lot code 3*2223**, and UPC 7527899724. All of that information can be found printed on the back of the bag near the barcode.

If you have any of the recalled patties in your freezer, the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service advises throwing them away or returning them to Costco. Considering Costco's generous return policy, it should be no problem getting a refund. For questions about the recall or affected products, call Foster Farms consumer hotline at 800-338-8051 or email the company
