Strudel Central

Pillsbury’s Toaster Strudels probably come to mind pretty quickly when you think about a quick, at-home breakfast. They also probably spring to mind when you think about fun box top projects and Gretchen Wieners.

The beloved toaster pastries full of fruity filling and creamy icing have stood the test of time and gained a loyal fan base, constantly cycling through flavors and styles. But which strudel flavors are best? Which ones should grace your toaster oven?

Though I was unable to find the Wildberry and Cinnamon Toast Crunch Toaster Strudels in my area, I gathered the remaining seven flavors and ranked them based on taste. And then, while I was perusing, I noticed that Pillsbury started making a savory version of its strudels called Toaster Scrambles. So I grabbed two of those, too. Here are the best Toaster Strudels and Scrambles, as well as the ones you need to avoid.

Another heartbreaker for you: The fan-favorite Boston Cream Pie Toaster Strudels have been discontinued.

Best: Cinnamon Roll Toaster Strudel

$5.44 from Walmart

No other flavor ever stood a chance. It’s basically just a flaky Pillsbury cinnamon roll, and, you guessed it, that’s a beautiful thing. Pillsbury’s icing is in a league of its own, and the addition of the gloopy cinnamon mixture inside the pocket goes very well with this strudel.

On the great jam spectrum, this falls perfectly between strawberry and blackberry. It’s got a slight ringing of artificial flavor, but the sticky icing should neutralize it. This is so good. Consider it stashed.

3. Strawberry Toaster Strudel

To go to the store and select a Toaster Strudel flavor is basically to play a game of what-jam-do-you-put-on-your-toast. These things aren’t complicated; they’re all just hot jelly in a flaky crust pocket. I’ll always reach for blackberry or boysenberry at first, and if that one’s a no-go, I’m hitting strawberry-flavored jam. Same deal here. If you’re like me, strawberry won’t let you down.

5. Blueberry Toaster Strudel

I am the world’s biggest snob when it comes to raw blueberries. If they’re not crunchy and tart I will punt them 50 yards away from me, but when it comes to blueberry pastries, I have no standards. Give them to me hot, gooey, oozing out of a pancake or muffin. This blueberry Toaster Strudel, which basically tastes like hot blueberry Smucker’s jam in a dough pocket, is just that. I’m here for it, always.

6. Cream Cheese and Strawberry Toaster Strudel

$2.97 from Walmart

Yeah, this is great. Strawberry is already my favorite flavor of Pillsbury jam, so mixing it with cream cheese is such a win for me. When I was a kid, my favorite breakfast was a bagel with cream cheese and strawberry jelly. Hello childhood, here we are again. Good to see you. This combo still hits.

These are good in a gross way. Or maybe they’re gross in a good way. I’m not sure, but let’s just say I put the box back in my freezer. I’ll revisit these, for some reason. Not sure why. The cheese “sauce” is incredibly nauseating, but I can’t say I hate it.

8. Sausage Toaster Scramble

I did not love the sausage inside this one. It was simultaneously too grainy and too soft. Toaster Strudels are notoriously hard to toast perfectly, and when you’re trying to nail eggs, cheese sauce, sausage, and a flaky crust all at the exact same time, you’re bound to slip up. There are so many other frozen sausage and egg breakfasts in this world (Exhibit A: Starbucks breakfast sandwiches). This isn’t the one you want.

9. Cherry Toaster Strudel

Do you like cherries? Let me rephrase : Do you like cherry-flavored things? Let me rephrase again: Do you like those weird Hostess cherry hand-pies? That’s really what this tastes like, at the end of the day. I’m not really into that type of cherry filling, so this is fully not my thing. Maybe it’s yours.
