Independence Day

The Fourth of July is a federal holiday, but that doesn’t mean everything shuts down. While government offices and financial institutions go dark for the day, most major retailers and restaurants plan to remain open — many operating under special holiday hours. 


Here’s what you can count on being open or closed this Independence Day, based on official corporate holiday schedules and confirmed statements.

Grocery Stores That Will Stay Open

Most national grocery chains will be open on July 4, though some will close early. According to their official websites and store locators: 

  • Kroger (including Ralphs, King Soopers, Fred Meyer, and other subsidiaries) — Open regular hours.  
  • Publix — Open until 9 p.m.  
  • Whole Foods — Open with holiday hours by location.( close at 6 p.m).
  • Walmart — Open regular hours.
  • Target — Open. (Hours may vary by location)
  • Trader Joe’s — Most stores open with reduced hours (typically until 5 p.m.).  
  • Sam’s Club — Open until 6 p.m.  
  • CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid — Pharmacies and retail locations open, hours may vary.  

Check local store listings for any early closures.

Retail Stores Open on July 4

Per company announcements and store holiday calendars, these national retailers are operating on July 4: 

  • Home Depot  
  • Lowe’s  
  • Best Buy  
  • Macy’s  
  • TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods (until 8 p.m)
  • Sephora  
  • Dollar General, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree  
  • Old Navy, Michaels, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, and more.  

Some stores like Aldi and IKEA will be open with reduced hours.

Restaurants and Fast Food Open on July 4

Most major restaurant and fast-food chains will operate on Independence Day. According to official press releases and confirmed store locators: 

  • McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Chick-fil-A (select locations)  
  • Chipotle, Taco Bell, Popeyes, Sonic, Subway  
  • Pizza Hut, Domino’s, Little Caesars  
  • Denny’s, IHOP, Waffle House — open 24/7 as usual  
  • Starbucks and Dunkin’ — most locations open, some with limited hours  
  • Buffalo Wild Wings, Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, Olive Garden, Chili’s — open, hours may vary.

These Places Will Be Closed

The following services and locations are confirmed closed for the holiday: 

  • Costco — All locations closed (company holiday calendar).  
  • U.S. Postal Service (USPS) — No mail delivery or retail service.  
  • UPS and FedEx — No regular pickup or delivery services.  
  • Banks — All major banks closed, including Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America.  
  • Stock Markets — NYSE, Nasdaq, and bond markets are closed.  
  • Government Offices — Including courts, DMVs, and local municipalities.
