Walgreens Closing Stores in 13 States This Month. Here's the Full List

If you think that companies are filing bankruptcy and closing stores at an alarming rate this year, you’re not alone. So far, Joann has gone out of business, Rite Aid filed bankruptcy for the second time, and Big Lots has closed all but a couple hundred locations.

Now we can add Walgreens to the list of closures. The company announced last year that it’s planning to shutter 1,200 locations over the next three years, and some are happening this month. Here’s what we know, and which locations are closing soon.

Walgreens has had serious money woes in the last couple years due to a number of factors, including more competition from online pharmacy providers and retail chains, smaller reimbursements for prescriptions, and higher labor costs since the pandemic. Many locations have been forced to reduce hours or operate with fewer employees, leading to long wait times and angry customers.  

The company plans to close 500 underperforming stores or locations where leases are up this year as part of the goal of closing 1,200 locations in the coming years. According to Newsweek and the Walgreens website, 29 Walgreens locations will be closing in May 2025.
