Target is recalling more than 200,000 Pillowfort children's weighted blankets because of asphyxiation risks. The recall comes after two North Carolina girls, ages 4 and 6, became entrapped in the cover of their weighted blankets and died of suffocation in April. The blankets have a removable cover, and should children unzip them, they can get stuck inside the blanket and suffocate. In addition to the two fatalities, Target has received two additional reports of children becoming entrapped in the blankets.
The recalled blankets were manufactured in China and sold for $40 at Target stores nationwide and on target.com from December 2018 to September 2022. The blankets include removable covers in eight colors and prints: unicorn white, unicorn pink, buffalo plaid red, blue constellation, space navy, pink, blue, and gray.
Target, along with the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is urging customers who purchased the blankets to stop using them immediately and contact the store for a refund. The blankets can be returned to any Target store or by mail by calling 800-440-0680 for a prepaid return label. Target is also contacting customers it knows purchased the blankets to arrange returns.
