Hold On to Your Nachos

Taco Bell is dialing up the nostalgia by bringing back a fan-favorite menu item from 1995. The Tex-Mex giant known for discontinuing many fan favorites (RIP the caramel apple empanada) over the years has decided to make amends and bring back one of its most beloved items — the grand ol’ Double Decker Taco.

The Double Decker Taco

Originally introduced in 1995, the Double Decker Taco quickly became a fan favorite — not just because of that Shaquille O’Neal commercial (though it helped). The beloved dish is a crunchy hard taco filled with seasoned beef, cheese, and lettuce, all wrapped in a soft tortilla slathered with refried beans. What's not to love?

The Rise and Ultimate Demise of the Double Decker Taco

The Double Decker Taco was never supposed to be a permanent menu item. It originally launched as a limited-time offer, but people loved it so much that Taco Bell brought it back in 2006, where it stayed cozy for almost 13 years before it was ultimately discontinued in 2019. After losing a 2022 fan vote to the Enchirito, the Double Decker still made a brief return in December of that year, but it wasn’t enough. Fans kept pushing on social media, demanding a comeback.

The Big Return

After the brief return of the Double Decker in December 2023, social media exploded with calls for it to be a permanent fixture on the menu. Taco Bell finally caved to the demand and brought it back again in October 2024.

Limited Time, Limited Price

Don't get too attached, though — it’s only here for a hot minute. In true Taco Bell fashion, the item is only on the menu until Oct. 30. Way to toy with our hangry feelings.

The taco is priced at just $1.99. For an extra $0.69, you can upgrade to the Supreme version, which adds diced tomatoes and sour cream.

Can’t Get It? Hack It

Don’t worry — if Taco Bell breaks your heart (again), Reddit already has a hack for you. Order a soft taco (sub beans, no cheese, no lettuce), grab a regular crunchy taco, and combine the two. Boom! You’ve got yourself a DIY Double Decker.
