Retail chains seem like they’re dropping like flies. Joann, a popular craft store, is going out of business completely, and Big Lots closed most locations after bankruptcy as well. But it’s not just retail that’s taking a hit: Restaurants are closing locations, too.

Subway, one of the largest fast food chains in the country, closed more than 1,600 locations over the last few years, according to USA Today. Here’s what we know, including how many Subway locations have closed in each state.

How Many Subway Locations Have Closed?

A total of 1,645 Subway locations have closed since the beginning of 2022, according to the company’s franchise disclosure documents. Based on USA Today’s analysis, the company started that year with 21,147 franchised locations, and there were only 19,502 locations by the end of 2024.

Why Have So Many Subway Locations Closed?

Because the closed locations are franchised, there could be many reasons why they closed, including money problems for the owners, declining sales, or even road construction making it difficult to get to a location. Subway has the most locations in the U.S. of any fast food chain though, which is why you’re likely to find locations not far from each other. A Subway franchise also has relatively low start-up costs compared to other chains, leading to lots of stores — and the potential for lots of closures.
