Check Your Fridge and Freezer

Last week, millions of pounds of meat and poultry products were recalled because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. BrucePac, a pre-cooked meat company, issued the recall after the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) found the harmful bacteria during routine testing.

Now, the nationwide recall has expanded to include nearly 12 million pounds of meat and a lengthy list of ready-to-eat meals sold at many of the country's biggest grocery chains, including Walmart, Costco, Trader Joe's, Kroger, and more.

Listeria is particularly dangerous for vulnerable groups like pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Thankfully, there haven't yet been any reports of illness due to this recall.

How Did the Recall Expand?

On Oct. 9, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced a widespread recall of nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products produced by BrucePac. Routine testing of products containing poultry produced by BrucePac found potentially dangerous listeria bacteria.

The recall has since been expanded to include an additional 1.7 million pounds of meat as well as prepared meals. The meals include prepackaged salads, bowls, wraps, and frozen entrees sold at nationwide grocery stores and retailers.

Which Stores and Products Are Affected?

The affected products were made between June 19 and Oct. 8, 2024, and distributed to retailers, restaurants, and institutions nationwide. The FDA recommends that consumers regularly check the updated list on its website to ensure that they aren't consuming any unsafe items. The USDA’s mark of inspection with establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” is a key indicator of the affected products.

Here’s a list of some affected grocery chains and brands included in the recall.
