Stopping, Shopping, and Dropping

Bad news for anybody who loves to get their groceries at Stop & Shop: Your location might be shutting its doors soon.

With dozens of stores closing down, it may seem like things aren't going so well in Stop & Shop's world.

What Is Stop & Shop?

If you don't know Stop & Shop, you're probably not from the Northeast. Once with hundreds of locations across states Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, the supermarket chain is considerably popular, but seems to be facing some challenges.

Why Is Stop & Shop Closing Locations?

"Underperformance" is the only reason Stop & Shop is willing to give. Back in July, Stop & Shop mentioned it wanted to "position the company for growth.”

Though, that's not to say that other locations will face the same fate anytime soon. A statement from the company says, “We’ve completed more than 190 remodels to date, which continue to perform well, and we’re committed to continuing to invest in our stores — as well in our prices — to deliver a great in-store experience and great values for our customers.”

Has Stop & Shop Done This Before?

Back in May, Stop & Shop announced that it was planning to close some stores, but it wasn't clear just how many. The news was announced by the CEO of Stop & Shop's parent company, Dutch grocer Ahold Delhaize, according to WCVB in Boston.
