This State Has the Most Costco Warehouses — By Far

Costco is a $242 billion retail machine built on bulk deals, cheap hot dogs, rotisserie chickens, and membership fees that print money. Founded in Seattle in 1983, it has grown to over 870 locations worldwide.

As of January 2025, Costco has 624 stores in the United States and 127 million members, according to ScrapeHero. It seems some states are more into bulk shopping than others. 

Here are the 10 states with the most Costco locations, including one with more than triple the number of the second place state.

Population per store: Approximately 587,470 residents per store

Michigan knows a thing or two about stretching a dollar, and Costco fits right into that mindset. The state’s 17 warehouses are well spread out, covering key metro and suburban areas, with locations near Detroit in Livonia, Madison Heights, and Roseville, as well as Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Bloomfield Township.

Virginia also has 17 warehouses strategically placed near high-density areas across the state, like Arlington, Newington Springfield, Norfolk, Fairfax, and Winchester.

New York has more Costco locations than Michigan and Virginia, but for a state with such a massive population, it's still not enough. Downstate stores in Brooklyn, Queens (Rego Park), Manhattan (East Harlem), and Staten Island are always packed, while shoppers in New Rochelle, Yonkers, and Oceanside enjoy a bit more breathing room. Upstate, Rochester, and Syracuse serve a much quieter Costco crowd.

Illinois is home to 23 Costco locations, and as expected, the majority of them serve Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.
