The Party Periphery

Say "spring break" and raucous parties, crowded beaches, and scantily clad coeds typically come to mind. The boozy annual blowout is a rite of passage for the college crowd, but for those hoping to steer clear of the frenzy, especially amid the pandemic, Cheapism asked travel experts to weigh in on some of the destinations to avoid from mid-March through early April —  and which warm spring break destinations to visit instead this time of year.

A top spring break party city, Fort Lauderdale is readying for a wild scene come March and April. Student-oriented travel site STA says thousands will flock to the city's beaches for "the biggest open spring break party anywhere." It's not only the beaches that will be swarmed; bars across the street also transform into party central. Come nightfall, the party gets even more raucous.

It's an up-and-coming destination and the tiny island of Caye Caulker, in particular, is quite the charmer — a quiet spring break destination where you'll find unforgettable seafood and crystal-clear waters. Belize is also known for being a nature lover's paradise. Top sights include the Belize Barrier Reef and the Great Blue Hole.

Nassau offers college students all the ingredients for a textbook spring break: affordable packages, nightclubs, booze cruises, water sports, miles of beaches, and plenty of sunshine. "Rowdy spring breakers descend on Nassau and Paradise Island, one of the Bahamas' most accessible islands, each spring break season," says Molly Fergus, vice president and general manager of TripSavvy. "But that doesn't mean you have to skip the gorgeous country entirely, especially when the country could use the tourism dollars to rebuild" after Hurricane Dorian in September 2019.

The water gets clearer and the crowds get thinner as you head to the outer islands of the Bahamas, of which there are more than 700, Fergus says. Consider the Exumas, a 130-mile-long archipelago known for its untouched beaches, sapphire waters, and memorable snorkeling. The region is made up of more than 350 cays and islands, and on many of them, there's far more nature than people. Great Exuma and Little Exuma are said to be among the most laid-back options here.

True, there's no beach to be found in Montreal, but there's plenty of history and culture to fill your days instead. And come nightfall, the city's party scene holds its own, offering everything from supper clubs to trendy bars and after-hours venues. Think of it as the best of both worlds.

Cancun attracts a fair share of college students year-round, but come spring break, it is easily one of the most visited destinations on the planet. Students are lured by hotels that cater to spring breakers — particularly rowdy groups looking for all-night parties — as well as budget prices and a seemingly endless number of nightclubs. "Cancun and the Riviera Maya is practically synonymous with spring break crowds and rowdy parties. If that's not your scene, avoid it this time of year," says Fergus from TripSavvy.

If you need your beach fix, head to Bocas del Toro, one of the country's top sun-drenched offerings. The region, made up of a cluster of tropical islands, is legendary for its sandy beaches and pale blue waters. The laid-back atmosphere of Bocas del Toro is an added bonus.

Las Vegas is a perennial favorite among the party crowd — no surprise for a place known as Sin City. Between the raucous pool parties and clubs that allow for dancing the night away, peace and quiet is something you won't find here. "Las Vegas is notorious for getting you to spend money ... and way too much of it! Lunch buffets, drinks every night, and gambling can drain your bank account fast," says Emily Mandagie, a full-time photographer, writer, and creator of The Mandagies travel and adventure website. "Not only will your money not go far, but this place will be overcrowded, loud, the opposite of anything you could call a break."
