Like It Never Left

Everything old is new again, and now that includes retro soda. Slice has been revived by a new company, and it’s available in tons of grocery stores nationwide already.

Here’s what you need to know about this beloved 1980s beverage and its revival.

What’s Slice?

In case you never experienced Slice, it was introduced in 1984 by PepsiCo. It was a lemon-lime soda that contained 10% fruit juice, and it was meant to be a competitor to Sprite.

A few years later, other fruit flavors joined the Slice lineup, including orange and cherry, and there was eventually a whole array. It’s one of those niche brands that lives on in people’s memories as a nostalgic taste of the ‘80s.

What Happened to Original Slice?

Eventually, the soda lost its fruit juice content, and popularity declined. The brand mostly died out by 2000 when it was replaced by Sierra Mist (a totally inferior drink, if you ask us).

Who’s Bringing Back Slice Now?

PepsiCo is no longer involved in Slice. They sold the brand to a company called Suja Life in May 2024. That company makes SujaLife plant-based cold-pressed juices with a focus on health and organic ingredients.

How Is New Slice Different?

As you could probably guess by the focus of its new parent company, Slice is being marketed as a “Healthy Soda” right on the can. Considering the popular rise in less-bad-for-you soda brands like Poppi and OliPop, it’s probably a smart move.

“While it tastes like the delicious flavors and bubbles of the original version, Slice Healthy now has real ingredients, only 5grams of sugar (or less), no high fructose corn syrup and features a [blend] of prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics,” said the company in a press release. “Slice is everything you loved about the soda as a kid, now with grown-up benefits.”

Where Can I Buy It?

There are seven total Slice flavors now, but not all of them are available everywhere, and some flavors will be exclusive to certain stores. Orange, Lemon Lime, Classic Cola, Ginger Ale, and Grapefruit Spritz are the core flavors. You can check Slice’s product locator to find them in grocery stores near you. Albertson’s and HEB should carry those core flavors, according to the press release.

Eight-packs with Orange and Lemon Lime flavors have been spotted at Costco. Target will be getting an exclusive flavor, Strawberry, while Albertson’s will be getting exclusive Grape. Both Cola and Ginger Ale flavors will be distributed to more stores later this year.
