What the Joe?

Trader Joe’s has built a reputation for delivering unexpected flavors and quirky combinations that somehow, against all odds, just work. From savory twists like soy chorizo to sweet surprises like chocolate-stuffed gnocchi, TJ’s knows how to blend ingredients in ways that most grocery stores wouldn’t dare.

While some of these mashups may seem odd at first glance, Trader Joe’s loyal fans will tell you that’s where the magic lies: in the chance to discover flavors that feel both adventurous and deliciously satisfying.

These non-traditional picks — whether it’s a tamale with raspberry chocolate filling or a classic snack with a twist — definitely deserve a shot. Who knows? You might just find your new favorite flavor combination in a place you’d least expect.

1. Watermelon Jerky

$3.69

I’ll admit, I felt grossed out when I first read “watermelon” and “jerky” in the same sentence, but it turns out it’s really no different from any other dried fruit. Seeing as I can handle a whole plate of durian (yes, that stinky, spiky fruit), watermelon jerky was a cakewalk. What I didn’t like was that it’s just way too sweet, with 38 grams of sugar and 39 grams of carbs per serving.

Easily one of Trader Joe’s most eccentric products, it has reviewers either begging for its return or flat-out calling it “awful,” “disgusting,” and “had to spit it out.”

2. Ube Ice Cream

$4.49

If you see this, grab it — and maybe grab one for a friend too. Short of flying to Hawaii, Trader Joe’s Ube Ice Cream is the closest you’ll get to this delicious dessert. If the hue of purple yam scares you off, rest assured the color has been enhanced with fruit and vegetable extracts, not dyes. The flavor is not earthy but more like vanilla-laced pistachio with a hint of coconut. We can’t wait for next summer to stash a few away in the freezer!

3. Soy Chorizo

$2.99

Why miss out on chorizo just because you’ve sworn off pork? Trader Joe’s Soy Chorizo brings all the spices and kick of the real deal, but some say it can be a bit oily or that the texture’s just not the same. If you’re after a flavorful meat-free option, it’s a hit — but non-vegans and vegetarians may still miss the original.

4. Cauliflower Gnocchi

$2.99

Trader Joe’s Cauliflower Gnocchi may be every low-carb lover’s dream, but it’s tricky to prepare. I overcooked my first batch, and it turned into a bowl of unappetizing mush. The next time, I pan-fried it instead, which was much better. Honestly, though, there are better low-carb options out there.

5. Candy Cane Joe-Joe’s Cookies

$3.99

Trader Joe’s holiday spin on Oreos, complete with chunks of real peppermint in the creamy center. Festive and fun, they’re a seasonal favorite for many. But if you’re not a fan of peppermint, they might be overkill. Some find the mint too strong or say they taste artificial. If you’re ready to go all-in on holiday cheer, grab a box, but they’re not for everyone.

6. Candied Hibiscus

$1.99

Eating flowers seemed odd, but Trader Joe’s Candied Hibiscus tastes surprisingly like floral fruit leather. It’s chewy, tangy, and packs a tropical punch. If you’re into unique flavors, it’s a fun snack, but be warned: some people find the floral taste too intense. You’ll either love its natural sweetness or find it too much like eating perfume.

7. Pickle-Flavored Popcorn

$2.29

Pickles and popcorn? This combination sounded terrifying, but when my pickle cravings kicked in, I rushed to grab a bag. It’s intensely vinegary and salty, hitting all the right spots. Though discontinued in 2022, word is it’s back on the shelves — if you can find one!

8. Chocolate Raspberry Tamales

$1.99

Sweet tamales aren’t new, but Trader Joe’s Raspberry Chocolate Tamale (now discontinued) takes it further with a berry tang and rich chocolate filling wrapped in masa. For tamale purists, the flavor combo was a stretch, and the texture wasn’t what I expected, but for creative dessert lovers, this was a hit.

9. Philly Cheesesteak Bao Buns

$3.49

No one asked for these, and I really wanted to love this East-meets-West creation packed with beef, cheese, and onions in a fluffy bao bun. Sadly, it didn’t live up to expectations — it looked nothing like the packaging (read: barely any meat) and felt more like a gooey paste inside a bun. It’s discontinued for now, but seeing how many fans mourned its demise, it might make a comeback.

10. Chocolate Lava Gnocchi

$2.99

Spoiler alert: chocolate and potatoes don’t mix well. Trader Joe’s dessert gnocchi didn’t do it for me, even if it was inspired by other similar products. Each bite-sized piece has molten chocolate, but the texture of pillowy gnocchi and chocolate was a combo I couldn’t enjoy. Fans say the only way to cook it is in the air fryer, but I’ll stick with their classic lava cake.

11. Ketchup Flavored Sprinkle Seasoning Blend

$2.99

Ketchup as a seasoning? It wasn’t for me, but for those who can’t get enough ketchup on fries or burgers, it’s perfect. Some call this oddball product “genius,” while others say, “Just use real ketchup.” Try it if you’re a ketchup enthusiast; otherwise, it’s an easy pass.

Trader Joe's

12. Unexpected Cheddar

$3.99

It’s called “Unexpected” for a reason: Think smooth-aged cheddar with hints of salty parmesan. It’s sharp, nutty, and, for me, very addictive — although my family didn’t agree. If you’re looking to spice up your cheese board, this one’s a must-try.

13. Butter Mochi Mix

$4.99

This one’s a personal favorite, though some might disagree due to its chewy texture. A Hawaiian dessert made from rice flour, it bakes into a dense, buttery treat with a unique crispy-gooey texture. Short of fresh mochi in Hawaii, this is pretty authentic — if you can find it!

Trader Joe's

14. Spiced Pumpkin Madeleine Cookies

$3.29

Don’t hate me, but I might prefer these to the classic French version. Soft, spicy, and with just the right amount of sweetness, they’re a hit with pumpkin spice lovers. Whether or not you think pumpkin belongs in madeleines, they’re worth a try.

15. Bacon Ganache Bar

$1.99

This chocolate-meets-bacon bar hasn’t been on the shelves since it was recalled in 2016, so you may not get the chance to weigh in. It’s a sweet, rich ganache with a salty, smoky bacon kick. If you can’t get past the idea of meat in chocolate, you’re missing out!
