Not Really Made in USA

Pyrex is in a lot of hot water — pun intended. Instant Brands, the maker of heat-safe Pyrex glass cookware and measuring cups, misrepresented where one of its products was manufactured, and now the Federal Trade Commission is refunding customers who thought the product was made in America. Here’s how to find out if you’ll be receiving a check in the mail.

1. What Did Pyrex Misrepresent?

Pyrex sold glass measuring cups that the company claimed were made in the U.S., but were in fact made in China. During the pandemic when hobby baking soared, the company could not keep up with demand for its measuring cups on Amazon, so it shifted product manufacturing to China from March 2021 to May 2022. However, Instant Brands continued to advertise the Pyrex measuring cups as “proudly made in the USA.”

“Consumers rely on marketers to make truthful ‘Made in USA’ claims,” said Samuel Levine, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “If marketers move their manufacturing outside the United States, even temporarily, they must update their advertising to make it accurate.”

2. Why Is the FTC Sending Out Refunds?

Misrepresenting the location of manufacture is a clear violation of the Federal Trade Commission Act, according to the FTC. In 2023, the FTC filed legal action against Instant Brands on behalf of consumers. Ultimately, the company agreed to a settlement that barred the company from making deceptive claims again and required it to pay a $129,416 fine. The FTC is using most of that money to send refunds to people who bought the product.

3. How Much Money Is the FTC Sending Out?

A total of $88,000 is being sent to consumers from the FTC to refund their purchases. All told, 110,000 Pyrex measuring cup products were sold while falsely advertising that they were made in the U.S.

4. How Do I Get a Refund?

The FTC is sending refund checks to 10,259 consumers. The checks will be sent automatically if you purchased the Pyrex measuring cups in question, and you don’t have to take any action to receive your refund. You’ll have 90 days to cash the check.

5. What Should I Do If I Think I’m Eligible For a Refund?

If you think you purchased the Pyrex measuring cups while the company was misrepresenting the place of manufacture, you should automatically get your refund in the mail, according to the FTC. If you have questions about your payment, you can contact the refund administrator, Simpluris, at 833-244-7320, or check the refund program FAQ on the FTC website
