Urgent Recall: One Dead, 15 Hospitalized in E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Organic Carrots Sold at Major Retailers
What’s Behind the Latest E. Coli Outbreak?
Nearly 40 people across 18 states have gotten sick, and one person has died after eating organic carrots distributed by Grimmway Farms, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in a statement on Nov. 17.
On Nov. 16, the California-based supplier issued an urgent recall for its organic whole and baby bagged carrots with best-if-used-by dates ranging from Sept. 11 to Nov. 12, 2024.
Which States Are Affected?
So far, 15 hospitalizations and one death have been reported in California, with Washington, Minnesota, and New York among the states with the highest number of cases.
The CDC warns the actual number of illnesses may be higher as many people recover without seeking medical care.
The contaminated carrots were distributed across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada at major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Whole Foods Market, and Trader Joe's.
Which Products Are Recalled?
The recalled baby organic carrots have best-if-used-by dates between Sept. 11, 2024, and Nov. 12, 2024. However, the whole organic carrots don’t have printed dates on the packaging but were sold from Aug. 14, 2024, to Oct. 23, 2024.

What Should You Do If You Have These Carrots?
Grimmway Farms advises consumers to check their refrigerators for any of the recalled products. "If you have these products in your home, do not eat or use them; throw them away and clean and sanitize any surfaces they touched. Consumers concerned about an illness should contact a medical professional," the company stated.
