After putting it off for years, Netflix is finally planning to crack down on the millions of users who share their passwords by the end of March. While details surrounding the streaming giant’s new policy are hazy, one thing is clear: It will be a lot harder to share your account next month.

That means that if you’re one of the 100 million subscribers who have a profile on someone else’s account, you may lose access or have to pay an additional fee.

Luckily, however, Netflix has a profile transfer feature that will allow users to move their viewing history, watchlist, and recommendations to a different account. Here’s how to do that before getting dinged by potential warnings and fees in the near future.

  1. Visit your account page and turn on profile transfers.
  2. On a computer, sign into the account associated with the profile you’d like to transfer.
  3. Go to the account page and choose the profile you’d like to transfer from the Profiles and Parental Controls section.
  4. Click on the Transfer Profile link.
  5. Follow the instructions and enter the email and password you’d like to use for the new account.
  6. After following the prompts, you’ve successfully transferred your profile. Note that Netflix will keep a copy of your profile on the original account.

Although Netflix has been hinting at an account-sharing crackdown since October 2022, the policy change received renewed attention this month after Netflix updated its FAQ page with new details. For instance, the company’s website said that it would limit accounts to one primary location. Subscribers would then have to apply for access codes — only valid for seven consecutive days — to watch while traveling.

Following a flurry of media coverage and backlash on social media, Netflix removed those details from the U.S. portion of its website. Those policy changes, Netflix clarified in a statement to The Streamable, are “only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru,” where the company is piloting its new rules.
