Gas’n Up the Fans

There are plenty of gas stations that can be found in every corner of the country, but it’s the regional spots that really tend to steal our hearts.

Thanks to a survey from Freebets.com, we’ve got some fresh data on the most popular gas stations across the country. What’s your favorite? Does your state agree? Only one way to find out.

Buc-ee’s
Cheapism / Blakelee Bartik

Buc-ee’s

Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas

Despite the appearance of a small-time operation, Buc-ee’s is actually quite omnipresent. It feels like you can’t really spend more than a few days without catching somebody in a Buc-ee’s hat or sweatshirt; the place is incredibly popular.

It makes sense. The place is superior to just about every gas station in the country, and as far as the rumors about the bathrooms go, they are true. Buc-ee’s bathrooms are immaculate. Huge. Pristine. I’d be willing to bet they’re cleaner than your own personal bathroom at home. Stop there for the bathroom, if nothing else.

Circle K

Alaska, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Oregon, Washington

As somebody who grew up in California without seeing more than one or two Circle Ks, this is a surprise to me. The gas chain is the second-most popular spot in the country, weighing in at eight states.

Cumberland Farms

Cumberland Farms

Connecticut, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire

Cumberland Farms calls itself a grocery store, but that’s not quite the truth; it’s more than just your average gas stop, though. It’s that in-between type of place, but it’s still worth a stop if you need to fill up.

Casey's General Store

Casey’s

Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota

Casey’s is not an Italian fast-food restaurant, but with the large menu of different pizzas and breadsticks, you’d think it was. In fact, just think of it that way, except you can also fill up your tank.

Wawa Gas Station

Wawa

Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania

Talk to anybody who loves Wawa, and they will let you know just how serious about Wawa they are. A sub may not be easy to eat while you drive, but the subs from Wawa are probably the best ones you’ll get from a gas station.

Speedway

Speedway

Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio

Speedway’s following is small but mighty. You’re in Slurpee town, so don’t leave without one.

Maverik Gas Station

Maverik

Arizona, Utah, Wyoming

Much like Buc-ee’s, Maverik is hoping they can make a partial living on merch alone. There’s an absolutely preposterous amount of it. The food here is better than your average Mobil or Chevron, so there are worse places to be hungry.

QuikTrip

QuikTrip

Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia

A slide through QT is the preferred way to gas up in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Virginia. Don’t sleep on the frozen treats, especially the soft serve.

Kwik Trip
Donald E. / Yelp

Kwik Trip

Nevada, Wisconsin

Don’t you dare confuse KwikTrip with QuikTrip (how could anybody possibly make that mistake?) because in Nevada and Wisconsin, the gas station of choice starts with a K. You’re not gonna find Kwik’s signature soups at Quik.

Jacksons Food & Gas
Matthew M. / Yelp

Jacksons

New York, Rhode Island

This report says that Jacksons is the most popular gas station in New York and Rhode Island which is interesting, considering there are no locations anywhere in New York or Rhode Island. Not sure what’s up with that. These things should be taken with some hefty pinches of salt.

ampm gas station

ampm

Alabama

This is the place I remember seeing most in California when I was growing up, so once again, this is weird that belongs solely to Alabama. I see you, Alabama. Respect.

Sheetz

West Virginia

The name Sheetz is interesting considering pizza is a very small part of the surprisingly large menu. Sometimes, a place can just be a gas station, you know?
