FDA Upgrades Lay’s Classic Chips Recall to Deadliest Classification

A Class I recall, the Food and Drug Administration’s highest risk level, has been issued for more than six thousand bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips. The FDA issued the elevated recall due to undeclared milk, which poses a potential danger for those with allergies.

On January 27, the FDA upgraded the recall of Frito-Lay’s 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips to Class I, the most serious category, meaning consumption could cause “serious adverse health consequences or death.” 

The initial recall was issued on December 16 after a customer complaint about undeclared milk. A total of 6,344 bags were affected, all sold in Oregon and Washington through various stores and online retailers. 

Check your pantry for Lay's Classic Potato Chips with a "Guaranteed Fresh" date of February 11, 2025, and manufacturing codes "6462307xx" or "6463307xx." These chips were distributed starting November 3, 2024. No other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes, or variety packs are part of the recall. 

Milk is one of the FDA's eight major food allergens, and for those with allergies, consuming these chips can trigger anything from hives and stomach cramps to more severe reactions like swollen vocal cords or loss of consciousness. So far, no allergic reactions have been reported, but the FDA advises caution. 

In case you have these chips and have a milk allergy or sensitivity, it's best to avoid them.
