One fast-food chain is beefing up its menu — literally — and it's probably the chain you'd least expect.

KFC has added a chicken fried steak meal to its menu. In case you're not familiar with the Southern staple, there's no chicken in chicken fried steak. It's a steak that's been fried in the same coating as fried chicken — think of "chicken fried" as a verb and method of cooking instead of an ingredient.

Every Tuesday, KFC offers chicken fried steak, also known as country fried steak and commonly abbreviated as CFS, as a meal with mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw, and a biscuit for only $5. Sure, it's just one day a week, and it's available only at participating locations for a limited time, but it's a great deal if you can get it.

You might think it unusual for a fried chicken behemoth like KFC to add steak to the menu, but the chain has quietly sold CFS for limited periods for years. Who knew? It used to be even cheaper, according to one Redditor. "This used to be a $1.99. Whenever I would go to get this on Tuesdays the place would be packed with senior citizens trying to get a cheap meal."

The menu addition comes as KFC is paring its menu, eliminating fan favorites like popcorn chicken, chicken wings, and Nashville hot sauce, so it's a bit of a head-scratcher. Perhaps KFC should change its name to KFCFS instead.
