How Many Stores Is Joann Closing?

Approximately 500 Joann stores will be closing, according to a statement from the chain given to CNN. Right now, it operates 800 stores across the U.S., so that means over half its locations will close, leaving a lot of people scrambling for craft and sewing supplies.

“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our team members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,” said a spokesperson to CNN.

Why Is Joann Closing Over Half Its Stores?

Joann is in serious financial trouble. The chain filed for bankruptcy the first time in March 2024, but was able to emerge a few weeks later without closing any stores. About a month ago, however, the chain filed for bankruptcy again, citing sluggish sales and inventory issues for its major money woes. Now, the chain sees “right-sizing our store footprint” as the best way forward for the company.

Will There Be Going Out of Business Sales?

Yes, the 500 stores that are closing are expected to have going-out-of-business sales, subject to court approval. According to a FAQ on the restructuring website, the company expects them to start on Feb. 15 and “continue for several months.”

Will Joann Survive Bankruptcy?

Things aren’t looking great for Joann’s future. The company is looking for court approval to sell all its assets, and right now the main bidder is Gordon Brothers Retail Partners. According to the FAQ, if Gordon Brothers buys the company, it plans to “pursue a liquidation of the company and conduct going-out-of-business sales at all store locations.” Here’s hoping another bidder will win out in the end.
