JCPenney Is Closing Even More Stores. Is Your State Affected?

Another day, another store announces that it’s closing more locations. Earlier this week, Joann Fabrics announced that it’s closing a whopping 500 locations, but now it’s JCPenney’s turn. The nationwide department store just revealed that it’s closing even more locations this year. Here’s what we know, and the full list of closures.

JCPenney filed for bankruptcy back in 2020. Since then, about 240 of its stores have closed. Right now, there’s about 650 locations left in the U.S. (Is anyone else surprised that the number is that high?!) “The decision to close a store is never an easy one, but isolated closures do happen from time to time due to expiring lease agreements, market changes or other factors," the company said in a statement. That implies that these closures are routine, but it’s still never a good sign. 

There are 8 stores on the chopping block. Each one is in a different state, so there are 8 states affected. The closures are not related to the recent merger of JCPenney with Aéropostale’s parent company to create Catalyst Brands, JCPenney confirms. 

Here are the 8 JCPenney locations closing. 

• California: The Shops at Tanforan, 1122 El Camino Real, San Bruno 
• Colorado: The Shops at Northfield, 8568 E. 49th Ave., Denver 
• Idaho: Pine Ridge Mall, 4201 Yellowstone Ave., Pocatello 
• Kansas: West Ridge Mall, 1821 SW Wanamaker Road, Topeka 
• Maryland: Annapolis Mall, 1695 Annapolis Mall Road, Annapolis 
• North Carolina: Asheville Mall, 3 S. Tunnel Road, Asheville 
• New Hampshire: Mall at Fox Run, 50 Fox Run Road, Newington 
• West Virginia: Charleston Town Center, 401 Lee St. E., Charleston 

There are no definitive dates for the closures. The company has said that these 8 locations will be closed by mid-year 2025. It’s likely that these stores will close when their lease comes up for renewal for the year.
