JCPenney Closing More Stores Nationwide This Week. Here's the Full List

JCPenney shoppers in several states will be left without a local store come Memorial Day weekend. The once-mighty department store chain is about to pull the plug on seven more locations across the U.S., with closures locked in for Sunday, May 25. 

Here is everything you need to know. 

A company spokesperson told USA TODAY these closures boil down to “expiring lease agreements, market changes, or other factors.” The closures are not tied to JCPenney’s newer ventures under Catalyst Brands, the umbrella group formed earlier this year that also includes Forever 21, Aéropostale, and Eddie Bauer. 

JCPenney filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May 2020, and in February 2025, announced it would be closing eight stores. Later that year, it was acquired by Simon Property Group and Brookfield Asset Management, but in 2024, it became part of Catalyst Brands.

Here’s where the lights are going out on May 25:

• San Bruno, CA – The Shops at Tanforan
• Denver, CO – The Shops At Northfield
• Pocatello, ID – Pine Ridge Mall
• Topeka, KS – West Ridge Mall
• Newington, NH – Fox Run Mall
• Asheville, NC – Asheville Mall
• Charleston, WV – Charleston Town Center

One location in Annapolis, Maryland was on the chopping block too, but a last-minute lease extension gave it a lifeline through August 31.

JCPenney has not announced any additional closures beyond these seven. However, the company has said that store shutdowns may continue depending on lease terms and local market conditions.
