We get it — who among us has not started Thanksgiving meal prep and realized we’re a couple sticks of butter short of a feast? When that or something like it happens, our minds might start to wonder what’s open, and given that Walmart is pretty ubiquitous all over America, it might be your one-stop-shop of choice.
So, Is Walmart Open on Thanksgiving?
This one’s easy to answer — nope. Walmart announced that its stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2023. This decision mirrors the company's action from the past few years and gives employees time off to spend the special day with their families and friends.
The news came through a mid-October video announcement from Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner, posted on X (formerly Twitter). “I am delighted to share that once again, we’ll be closing our doors for Thanksgiving this year,” Furner said. “Thanksgiving is such a special day during a very busy season. We want you to spend that day at home with family and loved ones."

“We all have so much to be thankful for this year, and I’m especially thankful for the opportunity to work with all of you,” he added.
That said, customers planning their holiday shopping strategies can rest assured that the retail giant will uphold the festive season's promise of deals and discounts. While Walmart's stores will be shuttered, Walmart.com will operate at full capacity on Thanksgiving Day. The retailer will also be open during regular hours — 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. in most locations — on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and on Friday from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. for Black Friday sales.
