Cooler Recall

Though we’re in the middle of winter, soon it will be time for people to start picnicking, tailgating at baseball games, and heading to the beach again.

But the popular cooler manufacturer Igloo just issued a huge recall, so you better check your garage and basement to see if your cooler is affected.

Here are all the details.

Why Is Igloo Recalling Coolers?

The affected Igloo coolers are being recalled for a horrifyingly visceral reason: fingertip amputation. Yikes. According to the recall alert from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the “tow handle can pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, posing fingertip amputation and crushing hazards.”

So far, there have been 12 reports of “fingertip injuries, including fingertip amputations, bone fractures, and lacerations.”

How Many Coolers Are Part of the Recall?

In total, Igloo is recalling approximately 1,060,000 coolers in the U.S. There’s also been about 47,000 sold in Canada and 23,000 in Mexico.

How Do I Tell if My Cooler Is Recalled?

Igloo is telling customers to locate the model number and the manufacture date on your cooler. The model number is a 5-digit number and can be found on the label originally affixed to the bottom of the cooler. If your cooler’s model number matches one on the list of recalled Igloo coolers, then you should find the cooler’s manufacture date.

The date code is also on the bottom of the cooler, imprinted in the plastic. It’s a circular pattern with an arrow pointing at the month of manufacture, along with the last two digits of the year. If your cooler’s model number and recall dates match one on the list, your cooler is recalled.
