Hoot, Hoot, Who?

Restaurant chains seem like they’re dropping like flies lately. Earlier this year, Bar Louie suddenly closed locations after filing for bankruptcy, and Bahama Breeze just shut down a third of its restaurants.

Now Hooters, the controversial sports bar known for its wings and scantily clad wait staff, suddenly closed dozens of locations across the U.S. Here’s what we know, including a list of the shuttered restaurants.

Why Is Hooters Closing Locations?

Hooters filed for bankruptcy just over a month ago in order to restructure the business. At that time, the company stated that there were no immediate plans to close any restaurants, but that plan has clearly changed.

In a statement to USA Today, a Hooters spokesperson called the closures a “Difficult decision,” but said they are “Committed to supporting our impacted team members throughout this process and are incredibly grateful to our valued customers for their loyalty and dedication to the Hooters brand."

Why Did Hooters File for Bankruptcy?

The bankruptcy restructuring plans involve selling the existing company-owned Hooters locations (about 200 of them) to existing franchisees, including one run by an original Hooters founder. The goal was to have every location in the U.S. be owned and operated by a franchise.
