Home Improvement and Decor Trends for 2021

Thanks to a year largely spent (hopefully) staying healthy at home, we've realized that, as the saying goes, there's no place quite like it. That said, we've also realized that a few corners of our homes could do with an upgrade. Luckily, Yelp recently released 2021's biggest Home trends in collaboration with Athena Calderone, celebrated design expert and founder of Eyeswoon. Here is some of what we can all look forward to in 2021 on the home décor front.

Searches and reviews for backyard remodeling projects went up by 864% this year. In 2021, Yelp forecasts a spike in pool installation (searches were up 374%), decks and patios (up 272%), gazebo and pergolas (up 111%), and firepits (up 97%). Calderone says, "If there is a silver lining to quarantine, it is undoubtedly our reunion with nature. It's little wonder outdoor design and hardscaping is one of the biggest home trend predictions for 2021."

If building a large-scale fire pit isn't in your immediate future, why not go with a sleek, portable alternative like this copper fire pit bowl? "With so much uncertainty in the world outside, it's no surprise that many of us have chosen to focus on the world we can control: our homes," says Calderwood. Searches for closet design went up in 2020 (71% from August to September), as did traffic for home organizers (up 39%). In 2021, we'll continue that trend with an increased focus on functional design that leads to a more organized, and therefore more zen home.

Sometimes, the simplest changes make the biggest difference. Clear canisters like this give miscellaneous products (like Q-tips, cotton balls, or bath salts) a home, and you can always tell what's inside. This is an inexpensive and easy upgrade.

From 2019 to 2020, Yelp searches and review mentions for "home office" rose by 80%. In the coming year, home design upgrades will center around "practical additions that offer a place to think, create, dream, and call your own," according to the report.

Yelp searches and review mentions for kitchen remodels are up 84%, kitchen islands are up 83%, and quartz countertops saw a 49% increase. The year will bring more big kitchen changes, but also "small changes that make a big difference and create a more modern look," Calderwood says. Think of changing up the countertop stone or adding a butcher block. "It's amazing how much a little paint, furniture, decor, and new materials can completely transform a space," she says.

It makes sense that, where most of us are staying home more often, we're looking to experience our space in new ways. Searches and review mentions for outdoor kitchens have risen 85% and it's expected that this trend will continue through 2021.

Another thing to look forward to in 2021? Bathrooms as self-care spaces. Calderwood explains, "Whether it's for a rejuvenating soak in the tub (as I love to do!) or a mini facial, it's here where we press pause and reclaim our rest. This also explains why Yelp has seen a 2,000% increase in search and review mentions for reglazing bathtubs"
