Cher, Then and Now: Pics of the Iconic Singer Through the Years

Cher, who is often referred to by the media as the ‘Goddess of Pop’, has been singing and performing since 1965. Since she just turned 75 on May 20, 2021, it’s the perfect time to look back on her iconic transformation. As you can see in the photo above, Cher hasn’t aged much since the early ’70s. This was the moment she and ex-husband Sonny Bono, who died in 1998, performed on ‘The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour.’ For the performance, Cher wore a colorful bra top with a massive cutout in the middle, and pants to match. Her sleeves were also made of fringe. And take a look at her toned abs — incredible! 

Just before Cher and Sonny Bono got married on October 27, 1964, they joined forces and started working on music together. They continued to do so for several years before Cher went on to pursue a solo career. 

In this photo, Cher is seen performing on ‘The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour’ in the early ’70s. It was an American music and comedy television variety show hosted by singer Glen Campbell from January 29, 1969, to June 13, 1972, on CBS.

Rock musician Gregg Allman and Cher posed for a photo together in London in 1977. Cher married him after divorcing Sonny, but the marriage imploded rather quickly. They were divorced shortly after this photo was taken, but they did birth a son together — Elijah Allman. Gregg passed away in 2017.

Sonny and Cher posed for a photo together in 1981. While they were no longer married at the time this picture was taken, they had become friends again after a tumultuous split. 

Cher wore an off-the-shoulder black shirt with cropped baggy leather pants in this photo from August 1982. She also completed the look with a gold belt and feathered hair.

Here, Cher rocked a Cleopatra-style outfit to endorse her new fragrance in 1988. Not only did she bare her abs, but her outfit included a massive, elaborate headpiece.

Cher performed at the reopening Of Euro Disney in 1992. Here, she can be seen wearing a leather outfit, paired with big hair.

Shortly after Sonny’s death in 1998, Cher and his widow, Mary Bono, accepted the duo’s star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Here, they’re pictured in California in 1998. 

In 1999, Cher starred in ‘Tea With Mussolini.’ In the movie, an orphaned Italian boy is raised amongst a circle of British and American women living in Mussolini’s Italy before and during World War II. Cher played Elsa. 

Cher performed her massive hit, ‘Believe’, at the 19th annual BRIT Awards on Feb. 16, 1999. ‘Believe,’ which came out in 1998, went on to become her bestselling song ever.

Cher attended Vanity Fair’s post-Oscars party in 2000, wearing a denim jacket and embellished jeans with a pair of heels. Doesn’t she look fantastic?

Cher performed at the 2003 New York Dinner to benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation at Waldorf Astoria in NYC on Nov. 10, 2003. For the occasion, she wore a purple top with striped pants and a gold belt. 

Cher wore an outfit covered in jewels while performing in Glasgow on May 11, 2004. We can almost HEAR this photo, can’t you?

Cher and Meryl Streep posed for a photo at the ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ film premiere in London on July 16, 2018. They starred in the movie together, and Cher even recorded an entire album of ABBA tracks, which dropped the same year. 

Cher and Bob Mackie posed for a photo together at ‘The Cher Show’s Broadway opening in New York City in 2018. 'The Cher Show' is a jukebox musical with a book by Rick Elice that tells the story of the early life and career of Cher. The musical had its world premiere at the Oriental Theatre, Chicago, on June 12, 2018, and opened on Broadway in December of that year.
