What’s Going On with Harris Teeter Closures?

The grocery chain told USA TODAY that the closures come after “careful consideration and strategic market review.”

Roughly 100 to 120 employees work at each store, and they’ll have the option to transfer to other Harris Teeter or Kroger-owned locations.

Why Are These Stores Going Dark?

The closures are part of a broader initiative by parent company Kroger, which plans to close 60 stores across the United States over the next 18 months. The company is looking to trim underperforming stores as it streamlines its national footprint.

What’s Next for Kroger and Its Stores?

Kroger plans to close a total of 60 stores over the next 18 months. Its interim CEO noted on a recent call that these unprofitable locations are scattered across the U.S. The company began its fiscal year with 2,731 stores, so these closures make up about 2% of its footprint.
