Safety Scare: Target Halloween Toys Recalled For Causing Fires, Burns

If you’ve shopped at Target this fall for Halloween toys for your kids, it’s time to check them out. One toy, a flashlight that projects Halloween-themed images, has been recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission because it can overheat, causing fire and burn hazards. 

Here’s everything you need to know about the recall, which was announced on Oct. 10, 2024.

The recalled product is the NPW Halloween Projector Flashlight. It’s orange with white stripes and a black cap on one end. It comes with three lenses you put over the light to create ghost, pumpkin, or skull patterns with the flashlight. The flashlight is about 6 inches long and uses two AA batteries. 

The Halloween projector flashlight can overheat. That can lead to the plastic outer casing melting, which can smoke, start a fire, and burn anyone that touches it. Yikes.

The recalled Halloween projector flashlights were sold at Target stores nationwide and on Target’s website. Roughly 4,700 of the recalled products were purchased during September 2024, and each flashlight was priced around $3.  

There have been nine reports to the CPSC of the NPW Halloween Projector Flashlight overheating. That includes six reports of smoke or fire and four reports of minor burns.  

Anyone who purchased the recalled NPW Halloween Projector Flashlight should immediately stop using it and remove the batteries. The CPSC advises you to write “recalled” in permanent marker on the product before returning it to any Target store for a refund. Target is also contacting any known purchasers directly to alert them of the recall.
