Recall Alert

It seems like nothing is immune to recalls lately, even cars. General Motors just issued a voluntary recall for hundreds of thousands of its trucks and SUVs because of reports of complete engine failure. It even instructed dealerships to stop selling certain models. Yikes. Here’s what’s going wrong and the models affected.

What’s the Recall About?

GM has an engine problem right now. Trucks and SUVs with the company’s L87 6.2-liter V8 engines produced for model years 2021 through 2024 have been recalled after reports from thousands of customers of the engines failing. It got so bad that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation into the problem earlier this year. Though that investigation is still incomplete, GM issued the recall anyway.

What Has GM Said About the Recall?

In a bulletin, GM has instructed its dealers to stop selling trucks and SUVs with the problematic engine. According to The Drive, dealers should inspect the crankshaft engine components for manufacturing defects that might be causing the engine failure. If a vehicle passes inspection, dealers are instructed to refill with a different weight oil before selling.

In a statement, a GM spokesperson said that the company is resolving “manufacturing issues affecting some engines. The safety and satisfaction of our customers are the highest priorities for the entire GM team, and we’re working to address this matter as quickly as possible.”

How Do I Check if My Vehicle is Recalled?

To see if your vehicle has the recalled engine, you can enter the VIN into the GM recall and warranties website. You can also check your vehicle’s owners manual for engine information, or take it to a GM dealership. They will inspect your engine for the manufacturer defect and make any necessary repairs at no cost.
