A popular brand of dog food has been voluntarily recalled due to potential contamination with salmonella.

Freshpet Select Fresh From the Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe was sold in 4.5-pound bags with a sell-by date of Oct. 29, 2022, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The product's retail UPC is 627975011673.

There have been no reported illnesses in pets or their humans (handling salmonella-contaminated food can be hazardous for people), but some of the contaminated product was shipped to stores inadvertently. A dog with a salmonella infection would show similar symptoms to a human, including vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. If your dog has consumed the recalled product, Freshpet advises you to call your vet.

The recalled products were shipped to Walmart stores in Alabama and Georgia, and Target stores in Puerto Rico and 10 states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia.

Anyone with the recalled dog food should immediately dispose of the product. Freshpet asks that anyone who purchased the recalled product, has any questions about the recall, or requests a reimbursement to call the company at (800) 285-0563 or visit the recall website set up by Freshpet.
