Recall Alert

It’s the height of summer, when families spend lots of time in their backyard pools. However, millions of above-ground pools from four popular brands have been recalled, according to a recall notice by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

Here’s how to tell if your pool is part of the recall, and what to do if it is to avoid another tragedy.

Why Are the Pools Being Recalled?

Millions of above-ground backyard pools have been recalled because of a compression strap that surrounds the outside of the pool.

On certain pool models, the strap can inadvertently create a foothold for young children to climb onto, allowing them to access the pool without any ladder, and potentially without adult supervision.

Unfortunately, CPSC believes there have been nine children that have drowned by gaining access to the pool by these compression strap footholds between 2007 and 2022. The children were between 22 months and 3 years old. The incidents occurred in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri.

The CPSC is also aware of three other incidents where children were reported to have gained access to the pools by climbing on the compression strap.

Where Were the Recalled Pools Sold?

Because there are so many brands affected, the recalled pools were sold at many different stores nationwide. According to the CSPC, they were sold at Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe’s, Kmart, Toys “R” Us, Sam’s Club, The Home Depot, Big Lots, Costco, and BJ’s, among others.

They were also sold online from those retailers plus websites like Amazon, Wayfair, and the manufacturer’s websites. They were priced between $400 and $1,000, depending on the model.

What Should I Do if I Have a Recalled Pool?

You don’t have to get rid of your pool if it’s recalled, thankfully. Instead, you can get a repair kit from the manufacturer that will allow you to cut off the compression strap after securing a rope to the support poles at ground level. Until you use the repair kit, the CPSC advises you to “ensure that children cannot access the pool unattended or, alternatively, drain the pool until the repair can be installed.”

If you have questions, more information, or want to check whether your pool is part of the recall, go to the Bestway and Coleman recall website, Intex recall website, and the Polygroup recall website.
