Urgent Recall: Costco Pulls Popular Frozen Burritos Over Contamination Risk

Costco shoppers should check their freezers as one popular frozen item has just been pulled from shelves over listeria risk. While no illnesses have been reported, the recall is tied to a much larger issue affecting multiple retailers.

Here’s what you need to know to stay safe and get your refund. 

Costco has voluntarily recalled its frozen Red’s Southwestern Mini Burritos, which contain grilled chicken, due to potential listeria contamination. The issue traces back to the massive 10-million-pound meat recall by the burritos' chicken supplier, BrucePac, on Oct. 9, 2024.

If you have Red’s mini burritos in your freezer bought at Costco locations in the Midwestern U.S. with the sell-by dates: 3/27/26, 4/1/26, 4/2/26, and 4/7/26, do not eat them and return them for a full refund.

Costco urges anyone who bought the recalled mini burritos to return them to the store for a refund. If you have any questions, contact Red’s directly at (888) 522-9408, available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT.

BrucePac’s recall goes far beyond Costco’s shelves. The supplier’s recall of 10 million pounds of meat and poultry has affected several major retailers, including H-E-B, Trader Joe’s, and Walmart. This massive recall has caused disruptions across multiple stores as they pull contaminated products to safeguard consumers. 

Listeria contamination is a serious health concern, especially for older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Listeria can cause fever, muscle aches, nausea, diarrhea, and other symptoms, and for those with weakened immune systems, it can be fatal.

The wholesaler recently recalled other frozen items, including Kodiak Power Waffles and Rock River Cattle Co. Smokey Hibachi Skirt Steaks, following contamination concerns.
