If you’ve spent much time on social media, you’ve probably seen influencers singing the praises of laundry stripping: that is, soaking bedding, towels, and clothing in a tub full of borax, washing soda, detergent, and hot water. Cyndi Bray, inventor of Wad-Free for Bed Sheets, says you should think twice before succumbing to this fad. “Most fabric isn’t intended to be submerged in the hottest water possible, which can severely weaken and damage fibers, for long periods of time, only to be transferred to the harsh agitation and spin of the washer in this weakened state,” Bray says. “The damage can be invisible but later appears as pills, rips, shreds, and tears in the fabric.” If you simply have to try it, she suggests sticking to sturdier items like towels, but steering clear of any delicate fabrics such as bamboo, eucalyptus, rayon, or silk.
